What happens behind every shipment you see moving across the world?

That’s what we explored together with students from West Virginia University during their visit to our offices.

We talked about real operations, real challenges, and the decisions that keep supply chains running every day.

The highlight? The exchange of ideas.

It’s always inspiring to see curiosity turn into understanding.

Thank you for the great questions and engaging discussion.

Wrapped doesn’t mean secured.

A recent road shipment from the Netherlands to Milan involved HVAC components — air ducts, stainless steel fittings, and 3-meter profiles — loaded on 4 pallets and 2 long packages.

At first glance, everything looked ready.

But during loading inspection:

👉 Stretch wrap was holding the cargo together — not securing it
👉 Cylindrical ducts could roll under movement
👉 Long items were extending beyond the pallet footprint
👉 No lashing or blocking in place

Under real road conditions, this would not hold.

Loading was stopped before departure.

What was done:
✔ Anti-slip materials added
✔ Multi-point lashing applied
✔ Round units blocked against movement
✔ Long items repositioned within safe footprint
✔ Load stability fully rechecked before departure

The shipment moved safely and arrived without damage.

In real operations, problems don’t appear on paper.
They appear at the loading point.

And that’s where experience makes the difference.

Most disruptions don’t start in transit.

They start in documentation.

A missing detail.
An incorrect description.
A document that doesn’t match the shipment.

Small issues, until they aren’t.

And suddenly:

• cargo is held
• timelines shift
• costs increase

Ex*****on in logistics is built on accuracy.

At Marinair, documentation is not a step in the process.
It is part of the operation itself.

Because when documentation is right,
everything else moves the way it should.

In LCL, the real value is not just in sharing container space.
It is in how smaller shipments are combined into one structured flow.

When done right, consolidation creates:

• better use of space
• fewer unnecessary movements
• more control before departure
• a cleaner overall flow

LCL is not just a smaller shipment option.
It is a planning decision.

At Marinair, consolidation is approached as a way to organise cargo more efficiently,
not simply to make it fit.

Because sometimes, the smartest move is not to move more.
It is to move more intelligently.

How much preparation actually happens before an international shipment even starts moving?

Recently, the Marinair Cargo Services team coordinated the preparation and road transport of 10 electric scooters from Greece to North Macedonia.

Before the truck could depart, several operational steps had to be arranged:

• pickup from the shipper’s facility
• transfer to a specialized packing warehouse
• placement of each scooter into custom wooden export boxes
• temporary storage and loading coordination
• preparation of export documentation and customs procedures

Only after all these steps were completed was the cargo ready to begin its cross-border road journey to Skopje.

In freight forwarding, the real work often happens before the truck even leaves the warehouse.

Curious to hear from others in the industry:
👉 In your experience, which stage usually creates the biggest challenge in cross-border shipments?

We recently welcomed students from the University of Colorado Boulder’s Leeds School of Business to our offices, where we explored how freight forwarding works in real conditions.

From planning shipments to managing unexpected challenges, the conversation focused on the reality behind global cargo movement, where coordination, timing, and decision-making come together.

It was a great opportunity to exchange ideas and connect theory with practice.

Thank you for your curiosity and engagement.

Why do ship spares shipments fail?

Rarely because of transport.

In most cases, failure starts much earlier,
with risks that were not properly identified or managed:

• unrealistic timing against the vessel’s ETA
• lack of coordination with the ship agent for delivery access
• delays in ship supply and customs formalities
• documentation not fully ready before arrival at port

When these factors are overlooked, the cargo may reach the port,
but not the vessel.

And at that point, it’s not a delay.
It’s a failed delivery.

At Marinair, ship spares are handled as time-critical operations,
with one clear objective:

👉 delivery onboard, within the actual port call window.

Because in ship spares logistics, delivery is not completed at the port.
It is completed at the vessel.
