🐬 Rescue of Injured Dolphin off Aragia Beach, Poros Kefalonia!
An injured dolphin was spotted in the waters off Aragia Beach in Poros, Kefalonia, and was rescued thanks to the swift response of the local community and the relevant authorities.
A sailing yacht and a RIB (rigid inflatable boat) sailing in the area located the animal and immediately alerted the authorities. The Cetacean Rescue and Rehabilitation Research Center “ARION” was informed and, in collaboration with the local port authority, requested the assistance of the local company Enalia Boat Rentals, as no Coast Guard vessel was available in the area for immediate intervention.
The owner of Enalia Boat Rentals, Alexandros Kotsis, responded promptly, offering voluntary assistance along with the company’s staff. Valuable support was also provided by the citizen aggelopoulos, who offered his inflatable boat and played a key role in the rescue, as well as the crew of the sailing yacht Agapi Mas. The rescue was carried out under the scientific guidance and instructions of the ARION team.
The dolphin was carefully guided near the shore, where a specialized veterinarian—an ARION collaborator—arrived to examine the animal and administer the necessary medical treatment. Representatives of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency OFYPEKA (N.E.C.C.A) were also present at the scene, offering essential support for the marine mammal.
The dolphin had sustained an injury to its tail, which made swimming very difficult.
We hope that, with the proper care from the experts, it will soon make a full recovery and return to the waters of the Ionian Sea.
