Melidoni Cave

The Melidoni Cave (also known as Gerontospilios) is a historically and archaeologically significant cave in Crete, located 2 km from the village of Melidoni. Standing at an altitude of 220 meters, it features stunning stalactite formations and served as a sacred site and tragic historical sanctuary.
Minoan & Roman Eras: The cave was a place of worship starting in Neolithic times. Legend links it to the bronze giant Talos. In Roman times, it was used as a sanctuary for Taleos Hermes.
The 1824 Tragedy: During the Greek War of Independence, the cave became a shelter for hundreds of local women, children, and a few warriors hiding from Ottoman troops. In January 1824, following a 3-month siege, the Ottomans lit a fire at the cave's entrance, suffocating the 370 inhabitants trapped inside.

Lake Kournas

Lake Kournas is a lake on the island of Crete, Greece, near the village of Kournas. It is in the Apokoronas municipality of Chania regional unit close to the border with Rethymno regional unit, 47 km from the town of Chania. Kournas is a fairly large village perched on a hill overlooking the lake.

Road sign

Crete's only freshwater lake, Lake Kournas, is relatively large, with a perimeter of 3.5 km. There is a nature preserve on the Southwest side of the lake. There is a rustic road from the North of the lake to the Hills on the West of the lake.

The lake used to be called Koresia after ancient Korion, a city thought to be in the area with a temple to Athena. The lake used to contain eels but now is better known for its terrapins and tourism. Tavernas and pedalo rental shops are located along part of the lake's shore.

Imbros Gorge

Imbros Gorge is an 11 km long canyon located near Hora Sfakion in southern Crete, the Mediterranean island. It runs parallel to Samariá Gorge, its narrowest part has 1.60 m and it ends at the village of Kommitádes (8 km/ 650 m for hiking). The Imbros village (aka Nimbros) is located at an altitude of 780 meters and is at the South end of the fertile plain of Askyfou.

The legend tells that two brothers were banished from Imbros, Turkey and lived in the Imbros village, Crete.

The Imbros Gorge mule trail was the only connection between Chania and Hora Sfakion, before the road was built. Remains of this trail can be still seen. The gorge witnessed an evacuation of several thousand British soldiers during World War II before heading to Egypt.

Historical Museum of Crete

The Historical Museum of Crete was founded in 1953, and is housed in a neoclassical building of exceptional architectural merit. It tells the story of seventeen centuries of local history and culture, from the early Christian centuries up to modern times. Byzantine art and culture, the periods of Venetian and Ottoman rule, the age of revolutions on the course to union with Greece, World War II, the Battle of Crete and the Resistance, as well as Cretan rural folk culture are all highlighted via selected exhibits combined with a wealth of visual material and multimedia. The finest exhibits are two El Greco paintings, The Baptism of Christ (1569) and View of Mt. Sinai and the Monastery of St. Catherine (1570), the only works by the artist now on Crete. The Nikos Kazantzakis is in a special collection including personal effects and manuscripts by the Cretan writer. Visits begin at a separate section featuring a large mock-up of mid-17th century Chandax (Heraklion).

Cave of Milatos

The Cave of Milatos is located in the prefecture of Lassithi, 3 km outside Milatos village. Although the cave doesn't have many stalactites and stalagmites, it has historical and sentimental importance for the locals as this is where about 3,600 people were slaughtered by the Turks in February 1823, during the Greek Revolution.

The cave is quite large, 73 meters long and 63 meters wide. Measuring about 2,100 sq.m., it has eight entrances and the height varies from one to three meters. Ancient remains found inside testify to the presence of people in the Neolithic times.

When the Revolution started for the Greeks to deliberate from the Ottoman rule, Crete had also risen and the Turks were trying to suspend the revolutionary actions by burning villages and killing people. To save themselves, the residents of Milatos found shelter inside the cave. The men were protecting the entrance and the Turks had circled the cave, not letting them out.

Two weeks passed, from February 3rd to 15th, and the Greeks suffered from hunger and thirst. Exhausted as they were, they made a brave decision: to escape the cave and fight the Turks, hoping that some of them would survive. However, the Turks brutally killed most of them, the 18 priests were burned to death and those who survived were sold as slaves to Egypt.

To commemorate this tragic event, a small church of Saint Thomas was built inside the cave in 1935 and a memorial to host the bones of the killed people. A small service is held every year in this cave to their memory.

To go to the cave, you park your car in the valley beneath and then take a narrow footpath on the slopes of a gorge, about 200 meters long.
