73-Year-Old Greek Runner Completes Authentic Marathon Barefoot and Dressed as an Athenian hoplite

At 73 years old, Idomeneas Avramakis, a runner from Heraklion, Crete, made a striking impression during Sunday’s Authentic Marathon in Athens (42.195 km). He ran barefoot, clad in full Spartan armor, capturing everyone’s attention and successfully crossing the finish line after 8 hours and 50 minutes.

Idomeneas Avramakis’ story is truly inspiring. Many years ago, he faced a serious health crisis that drastically changed his life. He was in a coma for a month, but when he awoke, his entire outlook on life and nature had transformed. Since then, he has never missed an Authentic Marathon and has participated in several international events as well.

"The Treasury of Atreus", also known as the Tomb of Agamemnon, is a remarkable piece of Mycenaean architecture, built around 1250 BC at the Mycenae, Greece. While it's widely referred to as a tomb, its exact purpose and the identity of the person who may have been buried there are still unknown. The structure’s size and precision highlight the advanced engineering skills of its builders.

One of the most striking features is its massive entrance, which includes a 120-ton lintel stone—one of the largest used in the ancient world. How the Mycenaeans moved and positioned such heavy stones without modern machinery remains a mystery that continues to intrigue archaeologists.

The tomb also features a corbelled dome nearly 45 feet high and 47 feet in diameter. This was the largest dome of its kind for over 1,000 years, showcasing the Mycenaeans' impressive construction techniques. They built it by carefully stacking stones to create a self-supporting structure.

Although the structure was likely looted long ago, its association with Greek mythology, particularly the legendary figures Atreus and Agamemnon, adds to its allure. These names were linked to the tomb because of its grandeur, though there is no direct evidence of who, if anyone, was actually buried there. Today, the Treasury of Atreus stands as one of the finest examples of Mycenaean craftsmanship and engineering.

The exact location of the Frankish tower of the Acropolis built on the pilaster of the south wing of the Propylae...
It was built by the Franks after the crusades as they conquered Athens before it fell into the hands of the Turks and was turned into a salt warehouse and a place of imprisonment and torture.
On that place there, Odysseus Verousis or Androutsos (Ithaca, c. 1790 – Athens, June 5, 1825) was a brave commander of the Revolution of 1821. He fought until 1820 on behalf of Ali Pasha and then fought for the revolution. In 1825 he was accused of collaborating with the Turks and imprisoned in the Acropolis of Athens where he was murdered by Goura before being tried on June 5 of the same year.
It was finally torn down in 1874 as part of a more general strategic removal of all post-classical structures from the Acropolis rock.

LYKAVITTOS HILL
ATHENS, GREECE

Lykavittos, is a limestone hill in the city standing at 300 meters above sea level with spectacular views over the city, Athens, from the northern suburbs to the sea.
It is located near Kolonaki, the posh district of the Greek capital. Covered with pine trees on its base, its two peaks house the 19th century chapel of St. George, as well as a restaurant and an amphitheater where open-air concerts are regularly held.

Lykavittos appears in Greek mythology, when goddess Athena dropped a limestone mountain from the Pallene peninsula for the construction of the Acropolis after the box holding Erichthonius was opened.
Its name means the mountain of the wolves.

The chapel of Agios Georgios (Saint George), a whitewashed church, features a small observation platform from which visitors can enjoy 360° views over Athens, all the way to Piraeus and the Saronic Gulf. A favorite place to watch the sun set over the city and color the sky with glorious hues, Lykavitos Hill includes a restaurant and café from which you can enjoy incredible views of the Acropolis in the distance, especially at night, when the Sacred Rock and the numerous Athenian monuments are illuminated.

Located near the car park, the Lykavittos theater is a large open-air amphitheater which can seat about 4000 people. The summer months sees the place used for theater performances and concerts of Greek and international artists.
Among the artists who have performed at the theatre included Ray Charles, Joan Baez, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Leonard Cohen, James Brown, Bob Dylan.
