NRA to Construct Over 49km of Roads in Niani Under Connect Gambia Infrastructure Project

The National Roads Authority (NRA) is set to construct a 49.2-kilometre road network in Niani, Central River Region (CRR), under Phase One of the government’s nationwide Connect Gambia road infrastructure initiative.

The project comes ahead of the foundation stone-laying ceremony for four roads in Niani, which fall under Lots 2, 3 and 4 of the government’s ambitious 1,500-kilometre road construction programme on Monday 19th May 2026.

The initiative forms part of efforts to improve rural connectivity and expand access to transportation infrastructure for communities across the country.

The 49.2-kilometre road network will cover key routes across the Niani area, including the Jarumeh Koto–Manna–Salikeneh–Jarumeh Kuta–Kayai road, spanning 12 kilometres under Lot 3; the Wassu Junction–Kuntaur–Jakaba–Pianist Sukuta–Barajally Tenda road, covering 16.4 kilometres under Lot 3; the Nyagabantang–Bakadaji road, measuring 10.8 kilometres under Lot 4; and the Wassu–Kataba Omar Ndow–Kataba Seringe road, extending 10 kilometres under Lot 2.

Upon completion, the road projects are expected to significantly improve transportation, stimulate economic activities, and enhance the living conditions of communities across the region. KERR FATOU Gambia The Smiling Coast of Africa What's On Gam Music State House of The Gambia

Residents of Firdausy village in the Central River Region have appealed for urgent government intervention as a worsening water crisis continues to disrupt daily life, livelihoods, and health in the community.

Villagers say unreliable access to clean water has forced farmers to buy water from neighbouring villages at high cost. Recent University of The Gambia graduate Modou Mbye described water as “a very, very big challenge,” adding, “Sometimes we sacrifice and go to surrounding villages and use our own money to buy water for our crops.”

Women in the village say the shortage has made it difficult to meet basic household needs. Yasin Nyang called on authorities and philanthropists for support, saying water scarcity has become “a great challenge for us, even to meet our basic needs.”

The situation has also affected maternal care at the village clinic. Giba Jallow warned, “Sometimes we have only 20 litres of water. The most stressful part is when women in labour do not have enough water to clean themselves.”

She said residents are often forced to fetch water from nearby communities as Firdausy increasingly relies on an old, unsafe well as its only fallback source.
