KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM MR GABRIEL KUMI'S ADDRESS AT GHBISE 2026

Mr. Gabriel Kumi, Board Chairman of COMAC delivered a thought-provoking address on the theme “Promoting a Sustainable Downstream Fuel Supply for Transformative Industrialisation.”

In his presentation, Mr. Kumi highlighted the critical role energy continues to play in Africa’s industrial growth and economic transformation. He emphasized that reliable, affordable, and sustainable downstream fuel supply remains essential for industrialisation and long-term economic development across the continent.

He stressed the need for Africa to balance energy security, affordability, and sustainability while navigating the realities of the global energy transition.

Touching on clean energy access, he underscored the importance of expanding LPG adoption across Africa, describing it as a practical solution for improving public health, energy inclusion, and sustainability.

Mr. Kumi further noted that sectors such as manufacturing, transport, agriculture, and logistics all depend heavily on stable fuel supply. He identified policy consistency, infrastructure investment, innovation, and stronger public-private partnerships as critical drivers for Africa’s energy future.

He also highlighted the importance of regional integration under Afcta ,noting that cross border collaboration and strategic infrastructure development can strengthen fuel trade and accelerate industrial growth.

He also pointed to opportunities for Tema and regional infrastructure to serve as strategic energy and logistics hubs.

He concluded by emphasizing that sustainable downstream fuel supply is not only an energy issue, but an economic imperative for inclusive growth and long-term transformation across Africa.

Looking back at the incredible energy, connections, and conversations from last year’s Ghana International Petroleum Conference (GHIPCON), one thing is certain, this year will be even bigger.

COMAC is excited to once again be part of a platform where innovation meets influence and where the right rooms create real opportunities.

The momentum is building, and GHIPCON 2026 is set to raise the bar.

COMAC JOINS INDUSTRY LEADERS AT GHBISE 2026 TO SHAPE AFRICA’S ENERGY FUTURE

The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) is excited to once again join industry leaders and stakeholders at the 3rd Ghana Biennial International Summit and Exhibition (GHBISE 2026), which brings together leading voices from across Africa and around the world to explore practical pathways toward a sustainable energy future.

Our CEO and the SPE Africa Regional Director, Dr Riverson Oppong in an insightful address, shared his perspectives on the future of Africa’s energy sector, the importance of collaboration, and the critical role of young professionals in driving sustainable growth across the continent.

He emphasized that Africa’s energy transition must reflect Africa’s realities — one that balances sustainability with energy security, industrial growth, and inclusion. He noted that oil and gas remain critical to financing development, expanding infrastructure, supporting power generation, and enabling the continent’s long-term transition to cleaner energy systems.

Dr. Oppong also highlighted the strategic role of natural gas in stabilizing power systems, the importance of strong governance and local capacity development, and the need for innovation, investment, and regional partnerships to unlock Africa’s energy potential.

He further called for greater inclusion of young professionals, women, local businesses, and host communities in the energy value chain, stressing that Africa’s energy future must be practical, resilient, sustainable, and ultimately work for Africans.

GHBISE continues to provide an important platform for dialogue, technical exchange, innovation, and collaboration as the industry works collectively toward shaping Africa’s energy future.

On May 12, 2026, stakeholders across Ghana’s downstream petroleum industry gathered at the NATIONAL PETROLEUM AUTHORITY for the launch of the pilot phase of the 24-Hour Economy Programme in the petroleum downstream industry.

This initiative signals a coordinated effort that goes beyond an operational adjustment. It represents a strategic move toward improving operational efficiency, strengthening service delivery, and expanding economic participation within the downstream sector, in line with H.E. John Dramani Mahama’s vision for transformative economic growth across the various sectors of the economy.

The pilot phase will cover 268 fuel stations across the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Western, and Northern regions, alongside eight depots and two refineries — Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) and Sentuo Oil Refinery. The programme is designed to improve service accessibility, strengthen supply chain efficiency, and create new economic opportunities within the sector.

This phased approach will allow for the testing and refinement of systems to ensure an efficient, safe, and sustainable transition as implementation progresses.

In his remarks, the CEO of COMAC, Riverson Oppong, PhD. , highlighted the critical role of technology in achieving a sustainable 24-hour economy within the downstream sector.

He called for the strengthening of the ATG initiative and the consideration of inline marking technology at the depot level to improve product traceability, combat adulteration, and enhance confidence in petroleum products in Ghana.

He also emphasized the need to protect petroleum infrastructure through a balanced approach that combines manned security systems with technologies such as CCTV surveillance and remote sensors to support operational efficiency and national security.

As the programme begins rollout, COMAC remains focused on ensuring a safe and sustainable transition that supports both industry players and consumers while enhancing productivity within the downstream sector.

The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) recently undertook a working visit to the GOIL LPG Bottling Plant as part of our ongoing commitment to promoting safety and operational excellence within Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.

The visit provided an opportunity to observe firsthand the plant’s bottling processes, safety protocols, and quality control measures.

From cylinder inspection and filling to dispatch, the facility demonstrated a well-structured approach to ensuring that LPG products meet required safety standards before reaching consumers.

There was a clear emphasis on safety culture across all levels of operation.

Staff adherence to procedures, use of protective equipment, and clear operational workflows reflected a conscious effort to minimize risk in an inherently high-sensitivity environment.

Their integration of real-time monitoring systems enhances responsiveness within the bottling process.

COMAC appreciates the engagement with the GOIL PLC team during the visit. Such interactions are important for knowledge sharing, strengthening industry practices, and supporting continuous improvement across the sector.
