A Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit is a floating vessel used by the offshore oil and gas industry for the production and processing of hydrocarbons, and for the storage of oil. A FPSO vessel is designed to receive hydrocarbons produced by itself or from nearby platforms or subsea template, process them, and store oil until it can be offloaded on to a tanker or, less frequently, transported through a pipeline.

They are used extensively across the globe wherever offshore drilling activities are taking place. These systems are of different types such as Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO), Tension Leg Platform (TLP), spar, barge, and others.

Floating production system market is directly dependant on number of offshore drilling activities that are carried out in world.

Product type segment in the FPS market comprises FPSO, TLP, SPAR and FSO. FPSO is expected to be the most dominating product in terms of demand for FPS. Various companies such as Royal Dutch Shell Plc, ENI, Petrobras and Premier Oil are using FPSO to extract crude oil from offshore fields. FSO is similar to FPSO except production facility that can be carried out on FPSO. Multiple tasks can be performed using FSOs such as floating, storage and offloading. TLP and SPAR are also used for carrying out drilling activities in the offshore fields.

Singapore-based container shipping company APL is planning to launch Felixstowe Express Service (FEX), a new weekly service that would connect ports in China and Europe with the UK’s Felixstowe container port.

With this move, APL is expanding its Asia-Europe service network as it begins calling at Felixstowe, which is located in close proximity to the main European shipping lanes and has broad inland transportation options to the rest of UK.

The new service will call the ports of Qingdao, Yangshan, Ningbo, Xiamen, Yantian, Port Klang, Felixstowe, Rotterdam and Hamburg.

According to APL, the first sailing would be undertaken by the 18,800 TEU MV Al Zubara, which is expected to depart from Qingdao on August 20, 2016.

The new FEX service, which will complement APL’s existing port calls to Southampton, would offer shorter transit times from China into the European markets.

A research team of Dubai’s port operator DP World is to visit Georgia to look into the construction of a marine terminal, inland terminal, logistics park or an economic zone, the company said following a meeting between DP World’s Chairman and Prime Minister of Georgia recently held in Dubai.

The discussion between the Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili and DP World’s Chairman and CEO, HE Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem at the Annual Investment Meeting in Dubai revolved around the solutions for Georgia’s trade and logistics development plans.

The company said that a possible DP World’s project in Georgia would be similar to other projects being developed along the New Silk Way between China and Europe.

“Georgia presents a promising business environment where trade can play an ever greater role in developing the country’s manufacturing base, while encouraging growth of the state’s extensive logistics, distribution and warehousing potential. Georgia is also well placed to facilitate trade between Aktau port in Kazakhstan along the New Silk Way, providing access to the Black Sea,” Bin Sulayem says.

DP World operates a range of terminals in locations along the New Silk Way linking China to Europe, including three joint venture operations on mainland China at Tianjin, Yantai and Qingdao and another in Hong Kong. There are six more locations in India, supporting over 32% of India’s container trade and 14 in Europe.

Trade between Dubai and Georgia totalled AED 376 million in 2015, with imports of AED 25 million, exports of AED 35 million and re-exports of AED 315 million, according to DP World.

27/07/2016

International Labour Organization (ILO) member states have confirmed the amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention ensuring better protection to seafarers and their families in case of abandonment, death, and long-term disability.

The Amendments to the Code of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC, 2006), which were adopted in 2014, will enter into force on January 18, 2017.

According to ILO, there was wide support for the new provisions, “with just two Governments stating that they shall not be bound by the amendments, unless and until they subsequently notify their acceptance.”

The 2014 Amendments establish new binding international law to better protect seafarers against abandonment and provide for compensation for death or long-term disability – two crucial issues for the shipping industry.

“When they come into force, in January 2017, the 2014 Amendments will require that a financial security system be in place to ensure that shipowners ensure compensation to seafarers and their families in the event of abandonment, death or long-term disability of seafarers due to an occupational injury, illness or hazard,” ILO said.

Mandatory certificates and other evidentiary documents will be required to be carried on board to establish that the financial security system is in place to protect the seafarers working on board, the organization added.
