A walking holiday in Porto & the Douro Valley – what to expect 🍇

Picture this...

Terraced vineyards cascading down the hillsides, knitted together with vines. The Douro River winding through the valley below and the golden rays reflecting on the water as you stroll from one viewpoint to the next.

September is one of our favourite times to visit. The first signs of harvest season begin to appear, with the vineyards coming alive as the grape-picking gets underway. The summer heat softens, the crowds begin to thin, and the region settles into a slower, more authentic rhythm.

Over the course of your holiday, you'll explore timeless landscapes, stay in carefully selected hotels, and enjoy an included wine tasting in the heart of the Douro.

Vineyard views, world-class wine, and the joy of exploring on foot. What's not to love?

Love the Amalfi Coast? Consider Cornwall instead.

Swap the crowds for an unspoiled stretch of southeast Cornwall, where rugged cliffs, golden beaches and peaceful coastal villages create the perfect setting for a walking holiday closer to home.

Like the Amalfi, you’ll enjoy spectacular sea views, fresh local seafood and fascinating history along the way. And at the end of each day of scenic walking, a handpicked boutique hotel awaits your arrival.

There’s nowhere quite like Northumberland… 🌿

Nestled in the heart of Alnwick, right beside Alnwick Castle, you’ll find The Cookie Jar – a boutique hotel featured on our Northumberland Coast Path & Castles holiday.

Once the Convent of Mercy, this beautiful building has been thoughtfully transformed by owner Debbie, with touches of its past still shining through, from stained-glass windows to the chapel suite (formerly the original chapel). After a day walking, it’s the perfect retreat. Warm, personal hosting and a team who take the time to get to know you make it feel special.

And the setting? It speaks for itself…
Bamburgh Beach has just been listed as the third-best, one-of-a-kind beach in the world for 2026 in the Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards. ✨

Looking for a UK alternative to a European Classic? Look no further…

Love the Italian Lakes? Then you’ll love the Lake District!

Lakes may be the obvious unifying theme, but as there is in Italy, there’s so much to enjoy beyond Cumbria’s lake shores, from literary culture to excellent local cuisine. And with a choice of high and low-level walks, plus the chance to bag up to three Wainwrights – there’s a route for every kind of walker. 🥾

The best walks deserve to be remembered ✨

Meet Penny & Eric, they’ve collectively done over 50 of our walking trips, whether that be finding the routes, or checking the walking routes. They are a dynamic duo, with Penny a photographer and Eric a wonderful wordsmith. You’ll spot Penny’s incredible photographs all over our site and you’ll often be following Eric’s notes when walking a route.

They told us that when looking for quiet footpaths they often go up ‘blind alleys’ more in hope than expectation, and just occasionally one of them will lead to something extra special. It’s just a reminder that our route finders go the extra mile to find the best routes.

We decided it was only right you also got to know them a little bit more…

Love Sintra? Then you’ll love Chatsworth.

If you’re drawn to Portugal’s Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, the Peak District offers a wonderful closer-to-home alternative.

Here, dramatic walks across heather-clad moorland in Britain’s first National Park meet a visit to the opulent Chatsworth House - a setting reminiscent of Sintra’s extraordinary palaces. What's more the Peak District National Park celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2026, making it the perfect year to visit.
