Summer Update.
This year seems to be flying by!
Thankfully our Sleeper Saturday took place before the record hot weather. A number of sleepers were replaced and maintenance work carried out on the points at the foot of the incline. Many thanks to Luke, Liam and Ben.
The hanging baskets and tubs on the station platform have been refilled but despite much care and attention, later struggled to look their best as the hot weather progressed.
Over the summer, the badly parched areas of grass across the railway site have required little or no cutting. Therefore, the time saved has enabled routine maintenance of storage sheds, painting of trackside signs and point levers etc.
Two wagons have also received attention including replacement planking and painting.
During early summer, the railway was pleased to host a visit by members of the Heywood Society which was enjoyed by all.
An open weekend was held in conjunction with the Mid Norfolk Railway annual 1940s event. The usual group of re-enactors in appropriate uniforms displayed their military equipment and other 1940’s artifacts which proved of great interest to the visiting public. Tea and cake also proved popular as did the chance to be the driver for a fiver of the army supplies train.
The recently positioned fencing alongside the field railway designed to dissuade visits from the local badger population (see Spring Update) seems to have simply moved the problem to the Whinburgh Road station area. Badger excavations are now evident again and they seem to particularly enjoy digging up the station platform!
During a recent visit by members of the Barnstaple and Yeo Valley Railway Trust, their Ruston loco was started for the first time in many months. It made a number of return trips on YLR and now sports the new BYVRT coat of arms.
