A very special opportunity arrived at the boatyard yesterday; 'Leila', a William Fife III 6mr from 1912, which was at risk of being cut up but is now in the safe ownership of Woodbridge and Waldringfield Boatyards.

Whilst she is without doubt a restoration project, she is without question a deserving one. With the help of the Fife Archive and we have a full set of drawings for her and would love to see her restored as designed.

For those who do not know the work of William Fife III, he is considered amongst the greats. The quinquennial (5-yearly) is about to start up in Largs and it would be a wonderful thing to see 'Leila' racing alongside her sisters again one day.

Some exciting moves in the Tent of Dreams!

Deben Cherub CC8 'Charity' (originally 'Snark') has found a new custodian and moved outside to be worked on in preparation for launching.

With an empty space in the Tent, a very special new 'at risk' boat is arriving so what this space...

Wow! What a weekend.

Over the bank holiday, we hosted the East Coast Gaffers Deben Rally and the Wooden Boatbuilders' Trade Association's 3rd Wooden Boat Gathering with events in Waldringfield and Woodbridge. We had over 30 boats, ranging from 119 year old yachts to clinker dinghies that were built last year, and almost 100 people.

With many boats arriving on Friday, we sailed on Saturday from Waldringfield to Woodbridge and went to the Longshed for WBG talks from fantastic local farmer and historian Patrick, Loïc, custodian of NYALA - Yawl aurique 1933 which was built by our Woodbridge Boatyard in 1933, and Belinda from Women In Boat Building about the Wooden Boat Stage . Between talks, we toured the The Sutton Hoo Ships Company and enjoyed pizza from The Woodyard.

On Sunday and Monday we sailed beautiful boats in beautiful conditions and, when we weren't sailing, we barbequed and were serenaded by the Orwellermen shanty group.

Thank you to all who helped with the organisation and all who attended, we look forward to seeing you (and more) again in 2 years time!

We were over the moon yesterday to find out that we were the winners of the Yards & Harbours category of this year's Classic Boat Awards!

To have been shortlisted alongside Brooklin Boatyard (the Runners Up), Pendennis, Gannon and Benjamin, Fox's Marina & Boatyard, Suffolk Yacht Harbour and Rockport Marine was already a huge honour and to win the public vote is incredible.

Thank you to all who voted and lent their support, Yards & Harbours was the most voted for category in the whole Awards this year! Congratulations to all of the boats, owners and yards in all of the categories, lots of beautiful work as always.

It was equally fantastic to present the Rising Star award (sponsored by ) to the Boat Building Academy Class of 2025 including one of our own young boatbuilders, Ariana; a brilliant group, brimming with talent and potential, and the BBA's first cohort with a 50:50 gender split.

Needless to say, we were back to it today with a busy week of launching and boat prep in full swing but, one day, we'll get round to sharing the bottle of Dartmouth English Gin.

Details of all the winners and runners up are in this month's Classic Boat magazine .

The Highwaymen, The Traveling Wilburys, McBusted, we all love a supergroup.

Over the May Day bank holiday weekend this year (2nd - 4th of May 2026) will be hosting the Old Gaffers Association's biennial Deben Rally again but, this year, with a twist as we are combining it with the Wooden Boatbuilders Trade Association's biennial Wooden Boat Gathering!

With 3 days of sailing, top-notch speakers, tours, and socialising, it is going to be a fantastic weekend and well worth braving the early summer for.

Based, as always, out of Waldringfield Boatyard with a day in Woodbridge, talks from sailors and boatbuilders, and lots of good company, we recommend going to the woodenboatgathering.com to read the full schedule and book your entry.
