Job Description
POSITION: Support Worker
QUALIFICATION: N.V.Q. Level II (Or willing to work toward)
REPORTS TO: Residential Services Manager
SUPERVISED BY: House Leader
HOURS: To provide 24 hour support which includes, unsocial hours, weekends, Bank Holidays and sleep-ins.
Job Purpose
To support clients, provide encouragement and help, to enable them to remain living independently in the community and to optimise their quality of life.
Primary Objectives
Support Workers are responsible and accountable for:
• ensuring clients receive a high standard of direct support, delivered in a consistent manner and in accordance with the organisation’s policies and procedures
• fulfilling their duty of care in respect of the organisation’s residents
• ensuring that the workplace is adequate for staff to carry out the assigned duties in safety
• ensuring that their own skills level and competence is sufficient to carry out the assigned duties effectively and safely
• reporting and monitoring functions within agreed performance indicators
• participating in ongoing professional development and quality improvement
Key Performance Indicators
• ensuring they have a thorough knowledge of the organisation’s policies and procedures as they relate to resident service provision
• completing the work as detailed on the roster in an efficient, effective and safe manner and in accordance with the organisation’s policies and procedures
• fulfilling their duty of care either by direct action or by referring matters to their House leader
• attending training when requested
• seeking supervision when necessary
• providing feedback on changes and incidents affecting the residents support
Workplace Safety
• ensuring they have sufficient information and resources(e.g. gloves) to safely carry out assigned duties
• identifying and reporting workplace safety issues, e.g. unsafe workplace, unsafe work practices, accidents, near misses, and significant incidents.
• following direction from their house leader on the performance of duties
• advising their house leader, if they are not sufficiently qualified, competent and fit to perform the duties assigned to them
• providing orientation and/or training to other staff when requested
Duties and Responsibilities
• read and understand the organisation’s policies and procedures as they relate to resident service provision
• carry out duties assigned in an efficient, effective and safe manner and in accordance with the organisation’s policies and procedures.
• take necessary actions to ensure residents’ safety, including referring matters to their house leader
• actively participate in supervision and training when requested
• request and attend supervision when necessary
• provide feedback on changes and incidents affecting the resident’s support
• Assisting with the maintenance of a clean, tidy living environment through daily cleaning of the communal areas, bathrooms and staff facilities
• Assist in weekly menu planning, shopping and cooking schedules as required
• To assist residents, if required, if managing their personal allowances.
• To assist residents with their personal care i.e. showering, oral hygiene, incontinence etc
• To supervise, prompt, monitoring of medications according to Policy manual
• Monitoring and ordering as required Kitchen, COSHH or other supplies
• To support residents to attend Psychiatric, medical or other appointments when necessary
• To take on a specific delegated task e.g. Fire Officer, H&S officer, COSHH, infection control etc
• To attend regular staff and house meeting as required
Reporting and Monitoring Functions
• reporting against key performance indicators
• ensuring their own work performance is in accordance with the organisation’s policies and procedures manual
• ensuring their reports and other documents are written professionally and in accordance with the organisation’s policies and procedures manual
Professional Development
• identify gaps in their skills and qualifications needed to meet the requirements of the position and/or the requirements of particular duties
• undertake the necessary training or study to gain the skills and qualifications to meet the requirements of the position and/ or particular duties within an agreed time frame
• participate in training as required by management
Other Duties
Support Workers will perform any other duties directed by management which are within the limits of the employee’s skills, competence and training.
