👋 WE’VE BEEN A BIT QUIET ON FACEBOOK… BUT DEFINITELY NOT QUIET BEHIND THE SCENES! 🐴🚛

We’ll be the first to admit it — we’re rubbish at keeping up with social media! 😂

Our page has been far too quiet lately, but thankfully that’s not because business has been quiet… quite the opposite!

Between transporting horses up and down the country, keeping our self-drive horseboxes out on hire and generally keeping everything running, posting on Facebook always seems to end up at the bottom of the list.

But we realised something…

We do it ourselves. You look at a business that hasn’t posted for ages and automatically wonder, “Are they still going? Are they actually busy?”

So we thought it was about time we popped up and said…

YES! 👋 We’re still here, still busy and still doing what we’ve been doing for the last 15 years — getting horses safely from A to B. ❤️

🐴 Is it just me, or are customers changing?

Bit of a rant, but I’m genuinely interested to hear from other small businesses — particularly those in the equestrian world.

I’ve been running Nags on the Move for 15 years, and this year alone I have had to take more people down the legal route to recover money owed than I have in the previous 15 years of trading put together.

And it seems to be happening more and more.

I should probably also add that we have successfully won every case we’ve had to pursue. Thankfully, after 15 years in business, our terms and conditions are pretty tight-knit and very clear about what customers are agreeing to when they hire from us.

But that’s almost beside the point — I don’t want to take people to court. I don’t want to spend my time sending formal letters, chasing payments and starting claims over money that shouldn’t need chasing in the first place.

A few months ago we had a horsebox returned hours late. Not 20 minutes. Not half an hour because somebody got caught in traffic. Hours.

Our terms clearly state a £60 late-return charge, so it was applied.

The response was basically, “Well, we won’t be recommending you again.”

And that’s the attitude I genuinely struggle to understand.

You agreed to return something at a certain time. You didn’t. You incurred the charge you agreed to when you booked. Yet somehow the business becomes the bad guy for enforcing it?

Then last weekend we had another box returned late and dirty.

This time I actually waived the £60 late-return charge as a goodwill gesture.

The box also hadn’t been cleaned. Rather than charging the £30 cleaning fee in our terms, I initially reduced it to £15 as another gesture of goodwill.

Nearly a week of messages, excuses and promises later, the payment still hadn’t been made.

And yes — it’s £15.

But if it’s “only £15”, why should a small business owner have to spend a week chasing somebody for it?

It’s £15 this time. £30 another time. £60 the next. Individually they might seem insignificant, but when it keeps happening, it adds up.

And cleaning isn’t free.

There’s my time, electricity, water, cleaning products and equipment. Pressure washers aren’t cheap and, with the amount ours get used, they certainly don’t last forever.

We sanitise our horseboxes between every hire regardless — that’s our responsibility.

Mucking out your horse’s mess and returning the box reasonably clean is yours.

I would never hire a car, van, holiday cottage or anything else, ignore the conditions I’d agreed to and then get angry with the business when they charged me accordingly.

When did taking responsibility for your own actions become somebody else’s problem?

Of course things happen. People get stuck in traffic. Horses won’t load. Emergencies happen. Talk to us. We’re human and we’re more than capable of being reasonable.

But there’s a big difference between something genuinely going wrong and simply deciding the rules don’t apply to you.

I don’t want to name and shame customers. I don’t want every small issue to end up going down the legal route. And I certainly don’t want to spend my evenings chasing £15 and £30 payments.

But being a small business and being reasonable doesn’t mean we’re a pushover.

Thankfully, the vast majority of our customers are absolutely brilliant and treat our horseboxes and our business with respect. ❤️

But after 15 years, there has definitely been a noticeable change — and this year in particular has been something else!

So I’m genuinely interested: other small businesses, are you finding the same?

After a challenging couple of months
recovering from my shoulder operation, I’m pleased to say that from the beginning of August, it’ll be full steam ahead at Nags on the Move! 💙

A huge thank you to everyone for your patience, understanding and kind messages while I’ve been recovering. They really have meant a lot.

📅 Our transport diary is now fully open from the start of August, so if you’ve got competitions, clinics, vet appointments or days out planned, now is the perfect time to get booked in.
