The last few days have been challenging, poor weather, big tides and me with a bad back. The pollack numbers have dropped off a bit but still some good fish to be had. The odd ling in the mix too. Anyone that fishes with me knows that I don’t cancel trips often. My back is not good and I have been in some pain. However, I feel I have to cancel the next three days. Ibruprofen ,Tiger Balm plus some cider should see me back in action for later next week !!!! I am sure a few days ashore doing my exercises should see me right. Here’s a pic of young Ed with his Ling he had this morning. He deserves a mention as he spent the rest of the day not feeling too good.

Having been at sea on the reefs for a few days now, it was nice to get the tuna training courses wrapped up. The first was an online course about Safeguarding and Diversity with a bit about tuna. The next course was the practical part. Delivered very professionally by Kev Lavis from Plymouth at short notice on a bad weather day. Also Kev is donating his Angling Trust set fee to his chosen charity. (Idiopathic Intercranial Hypertension). If you fancy a go at the tuna there are only a few days left available now.

The lure fishing has been great over the last couple of days on the reefs. Yesterday was good but today was just a pleasure to be in this job. Plenty of decent Pollack with the smaller fish being returned . This morning just made me chuckle to myself. The first fish to the boat was a John Dory. It’s not big but it’s a first for Tom Flanagan. The Somerset lads went back with plenty of filleting to do.

A fine weekend afloat with plenty of different species on the Saturday. Ideal for the species hunters aboard. From Coal fish to Combers with plenty of Red Bream and several Black Bream included. Then yesterday was a day wrecking for the group. Plenty of fillets to go around for them to take home.

I was beginning to think the weather was starting to settle a bit after doing a few trips, how wrong I was. I spent a day working out of Plymouth on Monday alongside Kev on Crusader and Andy on Patricia Rose. This should have been a 2 day charter but was sadly cut back to 1 by the poor weather. Anyway, I do have some individual places coming up on all day reef fishing trips in next month. If you fancy a day afloat please message me. .

A couple of hard days fishing in between the bad weather we seem to be having of recent. Here’s some pics of our exploits.
A moody sky. (Taken by one of my customers).
Bernie O’Connor with one of his plump tuna. (He had a couple and lost one today).

We pushed on yesterday, leaving the harbour in a fresh South East breeze. It was going to be a poor bit of weather as a gale was incoming during the evening. Knowing Sunday was going to be blown out we had to make a good effort for Didi, Josh and Dan.
We found a few tuna 8 miles South East of Looe but they were thin on the ground and didn’t want to take our live baits. We carried on up towards the East and bumped into Aaron on Helios. He had a similar situation but with the trolled gear , the fish were marking deep in the water column and weren’t up for long.
We deployed the live mackerel and still no takers. This was getting frustrating as the tuna were obviously focused on a different food source.
We went out around the Eddystone lighthouse then down towards the West . After going on another 7 or 8 miles in search of bird life John Saw a few birds dipping the water. We saw a few tuna and as we then looked around we saw more spots of fish in a deteriorating sea state.
This was where we had to maximise our time now. We worked the area for 3 hours or so and managed to catch 5 and we lost another 3. Now the weather was on the limits for playing fish safely so we decided to make a run for home.
I am glad we made the call to go home when we did as when we got just off Looe to drop the outriggers it was wild. Big swells and plenty of white water.

The reef fishing at the moment has been full of surprises. All of the 3 Bream species, bass, the odd John Dory as well as the usual stuff. We also saw another Scale Rayed Wrasse caught by Derek Nute from Tintagel Sea Angling Club. This is only the second one we have ever seen. Back on the tuna today which was a blast fishing the live baits. That’s without the thresher shark we hooked on the pollack gear which didn’t last long . It jumped twice so we knew what the customer had hooked.

A pleasant day on the reefs today, we had 18 different species of fish and another Crayfish which was returned.. Well done guys, considering the amount of tide and the tuna busting around us you did pretty well.

It was great to get back amongst the tuna today after our performance yesterday. After only having a couple and loosing a fish yesterday it really knocked our morale.
So today we left Looe and set off for the day’s challenge. Our aim was putting more tags back into the fish , also taking some DNA for ICAAT.
We had 5 tuna to the boat and lost 3, so were able to put a few tags away for future data collection. Thanks to Brett, Simon , Kris ,Dougie and of course John Crotty.
