Your Autumn Legal Checklist 🍂

A new season is a good opportunity to get organised – and your legal affairs are no exception.

As September comes to an end, here are a few things worth adding to your autumn checklist:

✅ Is your Will up to date?
Life changes, and it’s important to make sure your Will still reflects your current circumstances and wishes.

✅ Have you considered a Lasting Power of Attorney?
An LPA allows you to choose people you trust to make certain decisions on your behalf should you need them to.

✅ Moving home? 🏡
Getting your solicitor involved early can help you understand the conveyancing process and what will be required.

✅ Running a business? 💼
It may be a good time to review key agreements and make sure they continue to meet the needs of your business.

✅ Farming or running a rural business? 🌾
Have you started the conversation about succession and what the future of the farm or business might look like?

A little forward planning now can help provide greater certainty for the future.

Whatever is on your autumn to-do list, the team at Harrisons are here to help with the legal side.

❌ MYTH: “My family knows what I want, so I don’t need a Will.”
✅ FACT: Your wishes aren’t legally guaranteed unless they’re properly set out in a valid Will.

It’s easy to assume that your family will know what you would want to happen when you die. But without a valid Will, your estate will generally be distributed according to the rules of intestacy – and the outcome may not reflect your wishes.

Making a Will allows you to:
✍🏻 Decide who should inherit your estate
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Make appropriate provision for your family and loved ones
🔑 Choose who will deal with your estate
👶🏼 Appoint guardians for your children, where appropriate
💭 Clearly record your wishes and provide greater certainty for those you leave behind

A Will isn’t just about deciding who receives what. It’s an important part of planning for your family’s future.

Thinking about making or updating your Will?
Our team at Harrisons can guide you through the process and help ensure your wishes are properly recorded.

You know you work in a Mid Wales law firm when…

🌧️ The weather changes three times before your first coffee.
🐑 “Traffic” sometimes means waiting for sheep to cross the road.
☕ Putting the kettle on is an essential part of any important discussion.
🚜 You’re just as likely to pass a tractor as a car on the way to a meeting.
🏡 And there’s a good chance you’ll bump into a client while you’re out and about at the weekend!

We wouldn’t have it any other way.

We’re proud to live and work in Mid Wales and to be part of the communities we serve.

What would you add to the list? 👇

Who would make decisions for you if you couldn’t? 💭

It’s something many of us don’t think about until we need to – but planning ahead can make things much easier for you and your family.

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows you to choose people you trust to make certain decisions on your behalf if you are unable to make them yourself.

There are two types of LPA:
💷 Property and Financial Affairs – covering matters such as managing bank accounts, paying bills and dealing with property.
❤️ Health and Welfare – covering decisions about your care, medical treatment and where you live.

An LPA isn’t just something to consider in later life. An accident or illness can happen at any age, and having the right arrangements in place can provide valuable reassurance.

If you’d like to discuss putting a Lasting Power of Attorney in place, the team at Harrisons are here to help. Email: [email protected] 📧

Rural problems aren’t always black and white… 🐑

Jeremy Clarkson’s missing sheep have put the unusual issue of sheep rustling back in the headlines – but they’re also a reminder that owning and managing rural land can come with its own unique challenges.

While we’ll leave tracking down missing sheep to the police, there are plenty of rural matters where a solicitor can help. 🌾

From land ownership and boundaries to rights of way, agricultural tenancies, property transactions and succession planning, the right legal advice can help farmers and landowners protect their interests and plan for the future.

At Harrisons, our Agricultural Team understands the complexities that can come with farming and rural life across Mid Wales.

As for the missing sheep? We hope they’re safely returned to the flock soon. 🐑
