Usk Trail Access Group Usk Trail Access Group - promoting and creating cycling and walking routes in Monmouthshire Feeling inspired?

The Usk Trail Access Group (UTAG) is a voluntary, community-led group set up to facilitate the creation of a safe, family-friendly and predominantly off-road cycle and leisure track from Usk to Little Mill. We are currently working with local stakeholders including Llanbadoc, Usk and county councils, other public bodies, private companies/individuals and landowners towards the agreement of a suita

ble route using a combination of disused railway lines, public and private paths and roads. Although there is still some way to go, we believe the far-reaching benefits of such a scheme in terms of extended cycling and leisure opportunities, transport advantages and tourism will ultimately provide an outstanding cycling and walking experience for local residents and visitors alike. If you feel you could help in any way, then please get in touch – we’re always looking for more volunteers!

Despite the efforts of UTAG for the past 15 years, we have been unable to get the buy in from MCC or Sustrans to develop the cycletrack / footpath from Usk to Little Mill along the old railway line.
It has been a long slog but needs new energy to take this further and to try and secure prioritisation and funding.
If anyone would like to pick up the challenge, please message UTAG and we can share what has been done so far and what may be needed to deliver what would be a great route linking communities to other cycle tracks and public transport hubs and benefit Usk and surrounding residents, businesses and visitors to the area.

Monmouthshire County Council and Usk Town Council are working together on proposals to enhance key areas of Bridge Street and Twyn Square, with the aim of creating a safer, more welcoming, and more vibrant town centre that supports local businesses and community life.

This is your opportunity to shape those plans. Whether you feel positive about the proposals or have concerns, tell us what you like or dislike. It’s vital that your views are heard so we can ensure the final design reflects the needs and character of our community and this drop in session allows you to see the designs and ask questions to the officers and consultants.

You can view the proposals and share your feedback here, this goes live on Friday : https://www.letstalkmonmouthshire.co.uk/usk-your-town-centre-your-say

The online consultation is open until Sunday 7 June 2026, so please take a few minutes to share your views—whether positive or more constructive. I’d also encourage you to spread the word and invite friends, relatives and neighbours to drop in to The Grange this Friday and Saturday to see the designs for themselves.

Please do fill in this survey and share. The more support for improved connectivity between communities the better chance of improvements to be made.

Transport for Wales, the Welsh Government’s Strategic Road Network team, Torfaen County Borough Council and Monmouthshire County Council are working together to provide a new safe and accessible route that can be used by everyone in the community to walk, wheel or cycle to destinations between Pontypool in Torfaen through to Usk in Monmouthshire.

TfW wants to hear from residents and visitors to the area about their views of the proposed design and route so that it meets the needs of everybody wanting to use it, as far as possible.
The survey will be closed on 27 October 2025.

This is a coloured artist's impression showing pedestrians and a cyclist using the proposed walking, wheeling & cycling route which is a dedicated lane, safely separated from the highway lanes for traffic with a barrier and grass verge. The location in this picture is near the Pontypool & New Inn train station.

CONSULTATION: please do go along or fill in the questionnaire online. Whilst not the railway route, the plans would.improve links between Usk and neighbouring communities and the railway station and bus routes. We hope a more leisure, tourism and local business commuting route can be developed along the railway line in future but it will take time and lots of different parties.pushing the project forward whilst being led by a project officer.

CONSULTATION UPDATE: It appears the route being consulted on by TfW will use the A472 with marked out cycle lanes etc. This is not what UTAG have been campaigning and working to create for many years. Whilst we would support any improvements to the road to make it safer for cycling, our route would benefit all ages, abilities, runners and wheelchair users. PLEASE do complete the questionnaire and comment on the proposal.
