Today, Logistics UK Interim Director of Policy and Communications Ben Garratt gave evidence to the Transport Select Committee on the proposed expansion of Heathrow Airport.

His message was clear: air freight is a critical driver of economic growth, productivity and resilient supply chains. Heathrow is the biggest port by value, handling over £293bn of trade annually and connecting businesses across the UK to global markets.

A third runway would provide much-needed hub airport capacity, strengthen international connectivity, support exporters, enhance supply chain resilience and help attract investment into the UK economy.

As the voice of logistics, we're calling for the final policy statement to give greater recognition to the vital role of freight, trade and connectivity in delivering growth across the whole of the UK.

Logistics UK Chief Executive Ben Fletcher joined Matthew Wright on LBC on Saturday morning to discuss the ongoing situation in the Strait of Hormuz and what it could mean for businesses and consumers across the UK.

During the interview, Ben explained how disruption to one of the world's most important shipping routes impacts supply chains, influence fuel prices at the pumps, and ultimately affects the cost of everyday goods on shop shelves.

Following an abundance of nominations for truck stops nationwide, Ashford International Truckstop has been crowned the overall winner of business group Logistics UK’s national search for the Best Truck Stop of the Year 2026. Over 200 nominations were submitted, as HGV drivers around the UK had their say and highlighted the roadside facilities they thought were most deserving of recognition.

The initiative, which was launched in March, is part of Logistics UK’s ongoing efforts to draw attention to the need to raise the standards of truck stops across the UK roadside network and recognise the critical role they play for the nation’s drivers.

Drivers were invited to nominate truck stops based on how well they performed against criteria including security, lighting, food availability and value for money. Nominations were scrutinised by an expert judging panel, consisting of Logistics UK’s Interim Deputy Director of Policy Maddi Solloway-Price, My Truck Stop Co-Founder and Director Sue Alty and Motorway Buddy Founder Chris Holloway. The panel shortlisted six truck stops worthy of special attention, from which Ashford International was determined the Overall Winner. The five other shortlisted truck stops were: The Old Fox (Grantham); The Hollies (Cannock), AWJ Penrith (Penrith); Formula – Premier (Ellesmere Port); and Route 74 (Lesmahagow).

Logistics UK’s President Phil Roe, who visited Ashford International Truckstop today (7 September) to present the award, said: “Professional drivers are the backbone of the UK economy, and Logistics UK’s Best Truck Stop of the Year is a crucial initiative recognising the truck stops that provide drivers with an invaluable and essential service as they keep the economy moving.

“Ashford International Truckstop is a deserving winner of this search, and it was a pleasure to be given a tour of the site today and see firsthand its first-class facilities. However, their excellent standards are the exception and not the rule - too often, professional drivers around the country are contending with a lack of acceptable roadside facilities or forced to take their legally mandated rest breaks in locations that aren’t up to standard. That’s why we believe it is important to shine a light on the great truck stops that are improving the working lives of commercial drivers nationwide and encourage the operators of other locations to follow their example.”

Chris Holloway, Founder of Motorway Buddy added, “Security is a huge part of a driver’s overall experience at a stop and as this initiative shows, it cannot be an afterthought. I enjoyed judging all the nominations and recognising the truck stops that are doing a fantastic job.”

According to Logistics UK, there is a national shortage of safe and secure lorry parking, and the business group continues to urge government to conduct a national review of the availability of rest facilities for logistics workers and for truck stops to be incorporated into planning frameworks as standard. In addition, the organisation is pressing for a specific crime code to be introduced for freight crime to enable better data collection and appropriate sentencing.

This new feature is designed to encourage regular, constructive conversations that support employee wellbeing, engagement and development.

Important news from at Loughborough University today, where Rachel Taylor MP announced that the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Freight and Logistics, which she chairs, will launch a Call for Evidence on driver health and welfare, with the aim of publishing a report early next year.

We're pleased to see greater focus being placed on the health, wellbeing and welfare of the people who keep the UK's supply chains moving.

Our Senior Policy Manager - Road Freight Regulation, Chris Yarsley was in attendance at today's event and we look forward to working with Ms Taylor and the APPG, contributing Logistics UK's expertise and members' insights to support the development of the report.

THRIVE logistics wellness hub contributor Liam Swain is back with a handy exercise to help take care of your shoulders this .

Your shoulders do a lot more work than you probably give them credit for.

Whether you're driving for hours, sitting at a desk or spending the day lifting and carrying, it's really common for the shoulders to become stiff over time.

When that happens, everyday movements can start to feel tighter, posture often suffers, and it can even contribute to aches and pains through the neck and upper back.

One of my favourite mobility drills is this simple shoulder pass through. All you need is a broom handle, a stick or a resistance band.

Start with a wide grip and slowly take it overhead and back again under control. If it feels easy, gradually bring your hands a little closer together. If it feels tight, simply widen your grip.

Aim for 10 to 15 slow repetitions before work or during a break.

It only takes a minute or two, but keeping your shoulders moving well can help improve posture, reduce unnecessary stiffness and keep you feeling more comfortable throughout the working day.
