🚤 Cowroast Lock and the Marsworth Flight are now open for essential journeys only, 10am to 2pm.

That's the Canal & River Trust's update of 15 October, made to save water. We don't count a day trip as an essential journey, so for now our boats stay off both sets of locks: no heading south through Cowroast Lock, and no going down the Marsworth Flight.

If you've got a day booked with us, it's still on. Head north from Cow Roast Marina: three miles of level water with no locks, and lunch at the Grand Junction Arms. Fancy a little more? The Wendover Arm branches off at Bulbourne. Access is limited at the moment, so ask us on the day whether it suits your boat. The Trust reviews its notice next on 19 October.

Heard the locks near us have "closed"? Not quite 🚤

Cowroast Lock and the Marsworth Flight now keep opening hours, 10am till 2pm every day, while the Canal & River Trust saves water after a very dry spell. No end date yet.

If you've got a day booked with us, it's still on. Head north: three miles of level water, no locks to work, lunch at the Grand Junction Arms, then back to Cow Roast Marina. The one route we'd skip for now is south through Cowroast Lock.

The Trust asks boaters to "only navigate when absolutely necessary" while water is short. We read its notice every morning and we'll tell you if anything changes.

Ever wondered how canals stay full of water? 💧

Every time a narrowboat passes through a lock, water moves downhill. Around Tring, four reservoirs, natural springs, boreholes and pumps work together to keep the Grand Union Canal topped up and boats moving.

During the main boating season, the Tring Summit may need around four million gallons of water every day!

Summer isn't over just because the school holidays are 🍃

Along the Grand Union Canal, September brings some of the loveliest days of the year: warm afternoons, softer light, quieter towpaths and the first golden touches on the trees.

It's also one of the easiest escapes from London. Just 35–40 minutes from Euston to Tring, then a short hop to Cow Roast Marina, and the city feels a very long way away.

Our self-drive narrowboats fit up to 10 people, need no licence or experience, and come with everything you need for a proper day on the water - including a kettle, a fridge and somewhere warm to hide if the British weather has other ideas.

Whether it's a birthday, a reunion, or just an excuse to gather your favourite people, September might be the perfect month for it.
