We're seeing more and more travellers looking for something a little different from their holidays. As an avid yogi and yoga teacher for the past 10 years I have been on a few retreats and each time I have come home having made great connections, learnt a little or a lot about myself and been recharged and reconnected. In this day and age it's no longer just about where you go – it's about how you want to feel when you come home.
For some, that means sunrise yoga overlooking the ocean. For others, it's spa treatments, healthy cuisine, nature walks, meditation, digital detoxes or simply escaping the demands of everyday life and taking time to slow down.
Wellness travel has grown enormously in recent years, and it's easy to see why. In a world that often feels busy and constantly connected, many people are choosing holidays that help them rest, recharge and reconnect with themselves and the people they love.
The beauty of wellness travel is that it means different things to different people. It could be a luxury spa retreat in Mauritius, a peaceful mountain escape, a coastal hideaway in the Mediterranean, or even an adventure holiday that leaves you feeling refreshed and inspired.

Short on annual leave doesn’t mean you have to wait for a two-week holiday to properly switch off.

Sometimes four days is enough to give you that feeling of being somewhere completely different — but the destination you choose really matters.

When you’ve only got a long weekend, I’m always looking at how much of that time you’ll actually get to enjoy. There’s no point spending most of your first and last day travelling if there’s another option that gives you more time to explore, relax and settle into the holiday.

For me, the best short breaks are the ones that feel easy. Good flight times, a destination that suits how you like to travel, and enough time to actually enjoy being there rather than rushing from one thing to the next.

That’s where I can help. When I’m planning a short break for a client, I look beyond simply finding somewhere they’d like to visit. I consider flight times, how they want to spend their days, the kind of atmosphere they’re looking for and what will make the trip feel worthwhile from the moment they leave home.

Because when you’ve only got four days, every day counts.

Did you know that I used to live in St Lucia? I was working as water sports manager at Anse Chastenet/Jade Mountain hotels in the south of the island overlooking the amazing Pitons. What I love about this island is that it is as beautiful underwater as it is above. An island of great diversity offering lush rainforests, smouldering volcano, picture postcard beaches, friendly vibrant poeple and they know how to cook, creole style and party like its Rio de Janeiro. They say Vietnam is like Thailand was 20 years ago. It is full of amazing people, food and stunning scenery from the vibrant modern city of Ho Chi Minh, the bustling waterways of Mekong Delta in the south to beautiful Hoi An full of lanterns and Da Nang in the centre and the impactful, rocky castes of the north in Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh, not forgetting fascinating Hanoi with Ho Chi Minhs mausoleum. I think most people assume a better holiday simply means spending more.

In reality, that's rarely what I see.

After planning holidays every day, I've learnt that it's often the smaller decisions that shape the whole experience. A flight that's timed so you don't lose your first day. A room that's in the right part of the hotel rather than just a higher category. A private transfer after a long flight when you know all you want to do is arrive and switch off.

Individually, they might not seem like a big deal. Together, they can completely change how a holiday feels.

I've seen clients come home talking about things they never expected to matter, simply because we thought through the details before they travelled. Equally, I've seen people pay for upgrades that sounded impressive on paper but didn't really add anything to their trip.

That's why I don't recommend the same extras to everyone. The right upgrade depends on where you're going, who you're travelling with, what matters most to you and, of course, your budget. Sometimes I'll suggest adding something. Other times I'll tell you to save your money because I don't think it's worth it.

For me, planning a holiday isn't about ticking boxes or adding extras for the sake of it. It's about understanding what will genuinely make your time away easier, more enjoyable and more memorable.
