Today we met Dr Conor Ryan out in the bay helping our local Manx Shearwaters who have strayed off their migration route. Read below a post from Conor to find out more and how you can help.

The Manx shearwater is a streamlined, pigeon-sized black and white seabird with a longevity of up to 50 years. The Isle of Rum hosts the world’s second largest colony of Manx shearwaters, where they nest underground. Each September they fledge and head past Mull to Argentina, but not all make it. They are attracted to bright lights, especially white LEDs (e.g., house spotlights). Each year some crash in coastal towns on route, including Tobermory and risk starvation or predation by cats. They cannot easily take-off from the ground and need to be released away from gulls.

The communities in Mallaig, Arisaig, the Small Isles and Tobermory have been making efforts to reduce light-pollution to help the shearwaters.

What can we all do to help? For the month of September reduce unnecessary outdoor lighting and draw curtains after dusk.

If you find a crashed shearwater in Tobermory, even while visiting (often hiding in a dark corner e.g., under hedges, behind bins etc.), feel free to contact Dr Conor Ryan (or us). Conor (or us) will gladly assess and release birds that are found. Thanks for your help!
