It was hoped to complete lining and marking on the newly-resurfaced Tingwall Airport runway this week. However, continued unsettled weather means this will need to be delayed for another week ☔️💨
A decision has been taken to extend the work period for another week, so this work can hopefully be completed.
📣📣Inter-island flights to Foula and Fair Isle will now continue to operate from Sumburgh until Monday 16th June 📣📣
Tingwall Airport first opened for flights in 1976. This recent work is the first time that the full length of the runway has been resurfaced, so that flight operations can continue for years to come.
✈️ Inter-island flight operations will continue to operate to/from Sumburgh Airport until *Monday 9th June*, so that marking and lining can be completed on the runway at Tingwall Airport.
Since work began earlier this month, the resurfacing of the 805-metre runway has now been substantially completed. It will however take a little longer to complete the runway lining, which requires a window of dry weather for markings on the new asphalt surface, before the airport can reopen to flights.
A decision has been taken to extend the work period for another week, so this work can be completed. Flights to Foula and Fair Isle will continue to operate from Sumburgh during this time.
