I thought I would give you another little insight into the very beginnings of the familiar Hackney Carriage Licience as we know it today used for many of our Taxi Services.

This is about the horse.

The Hackney Horse was a breed of its own. Celebrated for its high step and wonderful presence whose story began in England during the 18th Century when horse breeding went through some changes to serve the demands for stylish transport.

The Hackney horse was a cross breed between the Norfolk Trotters and Thoroughbreds, this gave the perfect combination of beauty brilliance of movement and endurance - bred to trott powerfully and tirelessly. They were able to pull carriages at speed over a long distance before the age of Railways.

Their name Hackney comes from an old English word meaning 'riding horse' a general purpose horse however overtime it become very well admired for its flashy gate and total refinement.

Between the 18th and 19th Centurys this Hackney horse became a symbol of status and sophistication. The very wealthy gentry prised this breed for its whole demeanor and energy, at this point they were using these Hackney horses to pull elegant Carriages through the streets of London and other cities. With a little refining of the breed they became the most prestigious of Carriage horses.

During 1883 the Hackney Horse Society was established - one of the earliest breed registeres - which helped to maintain this breeds high standards and preserve its bloodlines.

By 1831 there were around 1,200 Hackney Horse and Carriages in operation the last being used in 1947, when they were retired replaced by Automobiles.

The Hackney horse is renowned for its high-stepping trot action which made it a stylish carriage-driving horse – yet nowadays the breed is at risk
