A small insight into understanding some of your Removal Costs
The below is called compliance and only reputable companies go through this process to ensure that you get the best service possible.
Moving to a new home is an exciting time, but have you ever wondered about the, behind the scene efforts, involved in transporting your precious belongings?
Here are the logistics of your removal company for JUST one Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) to help you appreciate the intricacies of the process.
When you hire a removal company, that’s using an HGV (large lorry) for your move they need to go through several hoops, both financial and practical, to ensure a seamless moving experience for you.
Below are a few key points:
Operator’s License (O Licence) Application:
To operate an HGV, the removal company must obtain an O license. This process includes a financial check to ensure they have the necessary funds for maintenance and repair.
An unusable credit of £8000
Qualified Transport Manager:
The company must appoint a qualified person as their Transport Manager. This role incurs a substantial monthly cost but ensures compliance with regulations and smooth operations.
Parking Facilities:
Suitable parking facilities for the vehicles must be provided, incurring additional monthly costs. These facilities ensure the safety and security of the HGVs during the moving process.
Maintenance and Vehicle Checks: Regular maintenance is crucial. The removal company must have a maintenance provider and implement full vehicle checks every six weeks to ensure their fleet is in optimal condition.
Driver Regulations:
Managing drivers' hours, breaks, and rest periods is vital for well-being and compliance. Drivers are limited to nine hours of driving time per day, with specific overnight and weekly rest breaks stipulated.
Driver Compliance Monitoring:
A robust system must be in place to monitor driver compliance, ensuring that all driver rules and regulations are followed diligently.
Vehicle Roadworthy Checks: Before hitting the road, drivers must complete a vehicle roadworthy check every day. This ensures that each vehicle is in tip-top condition for your move.
These are just a few of the many restrictions, rules, and financial costs involved in running an HGV for a removal company.
By understanding and appreciating the efforts put in by your removal company you can better see the value in using a professional company and the services they provide and have peace of mind on your moving day that you are being looked after in more ways than just taking care of your belongings.

So what do removal companies do when they are not moving people to their new homes?
Here at The Somerset Removal Company, we do plenty away from removals.
There is much charity work we undertake, and we love to be able to give if we can and do our bit to help.
For instance, at the moment one of the charities we currently give our support to is Somerset Aid for Ukraine.
We offer one of our large storage containers for the safekeeping of all the items that need to be sent to Ukraine until a large lorry comes to us and collects them to take to the needing people struggling in war-torn Ukraine along with medical supplies, clothing, food, books and all other manor of items to try to make their day to day struggle just that little bit less painful.
It’s not just the Storage container we supply as you can imagine being a home removal company we have many cardboard boxes packing materials and even tape to seal the boxes closed that we happily share.
It gives us a very humble feeling to think that we can help with the great efforts of Somerset Aid for Ukraine in our small way and a sense of pride every time the lorry heads off full of supplies.
In the past we have rescued and delivered such things as an antique Pianola to a care home where the tenants enjoyed a sing-along with their resident pianist until his sad passing.
But with the Pianola, they can now enjoy some of the 63 rolls of music that self-play whenever they want in their home.
Not much of a task I hear for a removal company to deliver a piano well these things are heavy much more so than an ordinary upright piano and when it has to go to the first floor without using a lift this involves a lot of team work and a nice cup of tea after.
But it’s not just for charities we pride ourselves in it is our flexibility to help in any way possible to make people’s lives that little bit easier.
Another instance of this was when I got a call at home at 10pm from a company moving a doctor from Scotland to Taunton, There was a long delay in the conveyancing process and in the end they could not gain access to his new home, So there I was watching TV with my slippers on in my PJ’s when the phone rings from the desperate removals company to ask if I could possibly open my storage up so that they could get unloaded and get home, and then at a later date deliver the Doctors furniture once the hic up with the conveyancing was sorted out, So there I was getting dressed at 10.15 pm going out to work to help unload all the furniture into our storage.
A few years ago we decided to enter a huge world sporting challenge and compete with the world's best at the very highest level of this most demanding sporting event, after many moments of practise and partaking in some of Somerset’s unique gastronomical local food and drinks we as a team steeped out and entered The World Welly Throwing Championships, I must say I was proud to join my team in the line up to enter this prestigious event. I can remember the tension and expectation of all involved as I took the welly in hand to start our journey into history and with a mighty effort of commitment and dedication we took the runners-up place in the team event and left with a very good sense of achievement.
So there it is just a few of the many things you do not get to see when you move home.
Catch up with us soon.

Yes it may seem a long way off, but if you have recently sold you would possibly looking at this time of year for completion "CHRISTMAS"
Moving house is stressful at the best of times. Let alone at Christmas! 🎄
Read on below to find out how you can keep your cool this winter and move house at Christmas with ease.
Check the hours of operation of solicitors, estate agents and removal companies.
Remember the housing industry may operate right up until Christmas Eve. After that date, many will not resume business untill the following week or after the New Year even. 🕰️
Make sure your new property is ready to move into, we can’t move you in until the previous owners move out or if it’s a probate sale or new build, make sure you know the condition it’s going to be left in before removal day! 🚛 🏠
Winter weather in the UK is stubbornly unpredictable. Professional removal companies prepare for moving in all weather conditions with chilly Christmas being no exception. 🥶
Even the most knowledgeable and experienced teams get beat by the weather on occasion. This can be helped by gritting pathways or clearing access to ensure vehicles can reach your property as close as possible. 🚛 ⛄️
Organise your packing! 📦
If you are packing your own belongings Ideally start at least two to three weeks before your move date.
Start with the least used rooms leaving essential items until last, remember to use protective materials to guard against any potential damage.
A professional removal company will be able to offer you quality packaging materials and boxes. 📦🚛
Don’t forget to label your boxes carefully. That way you can easily access everything you need once you arrive at your new home.
It also means you can get the Christmas lights and decorations out straight away!🎄🎊 🎁
Do your Christmas shopping early!
With so much to plan and organise it's important to get your Christmas shopping, or at least most of it, done before you start moving! Bare in mind that many local shops operate reduced or adjusted timetables for opening.
Pack an essentials moving box! 📦
Set aside warm clothes, towels, toiletries, any medication, daily requirements and other essentials you will need straight away. 🧤
A kettle and mugs are a great addition. Perfect for making teas, and coffees on the go to keep up energy levels and ensure you (and your removals team) remain hydrated. ☕️ 🫖
Moving at Christmas time is also a nice excuse to pack a few festive treats like mince pies and fig rolls to get you in the spirit. 🎅🏼 🥧
Remember to take down meter readings and contact your utility providers to tell them that you are moving house.
Settle outstanding bills and set up contracts with new or existing suppliers at your new house. 🧾
There’s nothing worse than switching on your Christmas lights to find the supplier has cut you off. Or worse still, you have no heating or hot water in the winter!🛁 🔥🚰
Notify your contacts of your change of address. 🏡👩🏻‍🤝‍👨🏽
You can re-direct your post through the Royal Mail’s online redirection service. It’s quick and easy to do and will ensure you won’t miss out on any Christmas cards! You could also send your Christmas cards out including your new address✉️🎄
Prepare your children and pets!👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🏡🦮
Moving house at Christmas can be stressful for children and pets that crave routine. Ensure you pack advent calendars and favourite toys, and comforts in your essentials box so that they can access these right away. Try to avoid washing blankets so they have a familiar and comforting scent in your new home.
Keep valuables safe ⚠️
(jewelry, heirlooms, personal electronics, medication, etc)
Keep them locked in a secure place and ensure that only you, or someone you trust is responsible for them. Whilst moving make sure they are securely packaged and you can always inform the team if there’s anything you want them to be aware of.
Pack presents in a designated Christmas box and let the team know if something is particularly fragile! Also, Inform them where they will be going in the new house so they know where to be placed! 🎁
Check the car the night before. 🚗
This might sound obvious but disaster can often strike at the last minute. Moving house at Christmas is no exception.
Fill up the car with enough petrol to get you, your family and to your new home. Carry out last minute checks the night before and then again in the morning.
It’s a good idea also to pack a de-icer and/or an ice scraper in case driving conditions become difficult. 🧊 🚘 ❄️
Celebrate! 🎊
Last but certainly not least: deck the halls and celebrate!
Once you arrive at your new home, put up some Christmas decorations and set about unpacking for your first Christmas in your new home. 🏡 🎉
Why not crack on the Shakin’ Stevens while you unpack and make the process an altogether more jolly affair! 🎄🎊🎁☃️🎅🏼
