Check the hours of operation of solicitors, estate agents and removal companies.
Remember the housing industry may operate right up until Christmas Eve. After that date, many will not resume business untill the following week or after the New Year even. 🕰️
Make sure your new property is ready to move into, we can’t move you in until the previous owners move out or if it’s a probate sale or new build, make sure you know the condition it’s going to be left in before removal day! 🚛 🏠
Winter weather in the UK is stubbornly unpredictable. Professional removal companies prepare for moving in all weather conditions with chilly Christmas being no exception. 🥶
Even the most knowledgeable and experienced teams get beat by the weather on occasion. This can be helped by gritting pathways or clearing access to ensure vehicles can reach your property as close as possible. 🚛 ⛄️
Organise your packing! 📦
If you are packing your own belongings Ideally start at least two to three weeks before your move date.
Start with the least used rooms leaving essential items until last, remember to use protective materials to guard against any potential damage.
A professional removal company will be able to offer you quality packaging materials and boxes. 📦🚛
Don’t forget to label your boxes carefully. That way you can easily access everything you need once you arrive at your new home.
It also means you can get the Christmas lights and decorations out straight away!🎄🎊 🎁
Do your Christmas shopping early!
With so much to plan and organise it's important to get your Christmas shopping, or at least most of it, done before you start moving! Bare in mind that many local shops operate reduced or adjusted timetables for opening.
Pack an essentials moving box! 📦
Set aside warm clothes, towels, toiletries, any medication, daily requirements and other essentials you will need straight away. 🧤
A kettle and mugs are a great addition. Perfect for making teas, and coffees on the go to keep up energy levels and ensure you (and your removals team) remain hydrated. ☕️ 🫖
Moving at Christmas time is also a nice excuse to pack a few festive treats like mince pies and fig rolls to get you in the spirit. 🎅🏼 🥧
Remember to take down meter readings and contact your utility providers to tell them that you are moving house.
Settle outstanding bills and set up contracts with new or existing suppliers at your new house. 🧾
There’s nothing worse than switching on your Christmas lights to find the supplier has cut you off. Or worse still, you have no heating or hot water in the winter!🛁 🔥🚰
Notify your contacts of your change of address. 🏡👩🏻🤝👨🏽
You can re-direct your post through the Royal Mail’s online redirection service. It’s quick and easy to do and will ensure you won’t miss out on any Christmas cards! You could also send your Christmas cards out including your new address✉️🎄
Prepare your children and pets!👨👩👧👦🏡🦮
Moving house at Christmas can be stressful for children and pets that crave routine. Ensure you pack advent calendars and favourite toys, and comforts in your essentials box so that they can access these right away. Try to avoid washing blankets so they have a familiar and comforting scent in your new home.
Keep valuables safe ⚠️
(jewelry, heirlooms, personal electronics, medication, etc)
Keep them locked in a secure place and ensure that only you, or someone you trust is responsible for them. Whilst moving make sure they are securely packaged and you can always inform the team if there’s anything you want them to be aware of.
Pack presents in a designated Christmas box and let the team know if something is particularly fragile! Also, Inform them where they will be going in the new house so they know where to be placed! 🎁
Check the car the night before. 🚗
This might sound obvious but disaster can often strike at the last minute. Moving house at Christmas is no exception.
Fill up the car with enough petrol to get you, your family and to your new home. Carry out last minute checks the night before and then again in the morning.
It’s a good idea also to pack a de-icer and/or an ice scraper in case driving conditions become difficult. 🧊 🚘 ❄️
Celebrate! 🎊
Last but certainly not least: deck the halls and celebrate!
Once you arrive at your new home, put up some Christmas decorations and set about unpacking for your first Christmas in your new home. 🏡 🎉
Why not crack on the Shakin’ Stevens while you unpack and make the process an altogether more jolly affair! 🎄🎊🎁☃️🎅🏼
