I am a bit late, as this is now last week's issue, but I was delighted to see the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run being given prominence in Classic Car Weekly!

I collect all sorts of things, including transport memorabilia. For obvious reasons, more than a few items relate to Austin and Rover, and other BMC/Leyland marques.
I was, therefore, delighted to be able to buy this plaque on ebay at the start of the week. It purports to relate to possibly the last registered UK-built Mini Moke. Whether this is true or not, I have no idea. The vendor stated it came out of an old garage.
It is larger than I expected (pound coin shown for scale) but it probably would have fitted nicely on a Moke dashboard. It has certainly been fitted to something for it is well weathered. It has such a nice patina that I may leave it as it is rather than polish it up.
Whatever it's history, it is a great addition to my collection!

I am off work, ill and feeling very sorry for myself. So exhausted and fed up that I haven't even been bothered to open these packages that have arrived over the last few days.
They contain Austin bits and pieces! Might open them later today. Might open them tomorrow...

This beautiful 1911 Austin, a participant in The Veteran Car Club of Great Britain "Glens & Castles Ramble," was a very welcome visitor at my work earlier today.
The 15 hp was produced from 1908 to 1915 with 2.5 litre engine from 1908-10 and 2.8 from 1911-15. A variety of body styles were available, including tourers and a town carriage.
The model was introduced in 1908, the same year that my cousin Miss Muriel Annie Thompson raced her brother Oscar's Austin, the original Pobble, to victory at Brooklands in the Ladies Silver Bracelet Handicap Race.

One of Pobble's garage-mates, until the other week, was my Dad's 1978 Rover SD1 3500. After owning it for over forty years he decided to sell, so it will be passing through Morris Leslie's classic auction in a few days time.
Although sad to see it go, as it was a HUGE part of my childhood and also the car that took my very pregnant wife to our very quiet covid lockdown wedding, I was delighted that it featured on the front page of this week's Classic Car Weekly!! (Not least because it is my photograph!)
I really hope that whoever buys it will love and enjoy it as much as our family has for over four decades.

I hardly ever buy anything on ebay (I actually typed that with a straight face! 🀣🀣🀣) so I was looking forward to opening this package that arrived from the USA.
I was not disappointed. It contained some great new additions for my collection of Austin automobilia!
American Austin produced Austin Sevens under licence from 1930 to 1934. When it filed for bankruptcy the assets were bought by new owners, who set up as American Bantam.

I really like the patina of Pobble. She is 92 so I feel that she should look old! But, it has to be said, her interior needed a wee bit of sprucing up.
The floor was, for the most part, bare metal in two or three different colours. I was going to buy a nice set of new, original pattern, rubber mats. Then my Uncle Dite, a retired carpet fitter, sourced and offered to fit something suitable.
After a coat of black paint, it now has a set of custom fitted, but removable, carpets. It just needs a little lift-off cover for the transmission tunnel inspection plate.
I now need to find some nice material to cover the rear wheel arches, then I can refit the interior sill trims and tidy up some wiring.
After all this I decided to take her for a nice drive in the country.
My eldest son came with me and we enjoyed it immensely for the weather was lovely and the windows were down all the way!
Then, about a mile from home, we needed the services of a breakdown truck to complete the journey. (AND it started raining!)
But that is a story for another day...

My pick of the Austin cars and commercials on show at the Scottish Transport Extravaganza on Sunday 14th July 2024. There were some beautiful vehicles, including a few that I had never seen before.
