A poem dedicated to Henry by Lee Crouch, fly high dude 🙏 😇
I Can’t Breathe,
Eighteen years of life and light,
Walking home through quiet night.
Laughter fading, steps turned home,
Never thinking you would roam.
To a place where darkness waits,
Where cruel fate unlocks its gates.
Vikrum Digwa came that day,
Bearing steel of eight inches’ sway.
With cold intent and heart untrue,
He drew that blade and turned on you.
No cause, no right, no just defence,
Just violent rage and bitter sense.
Before the court he spoke a lie,
Wove false words to shield his eye.
Claimed you spoke with racist breath,
Said he struck to save his death.
But every word was hollow, and thin
A wicked shield for guilt within.
They listened close to what he said,
Took his word as truth instead.
Because he named that heavy claim,
Justice shifted, and lost its name.
They heard his story, bought his tale,
And let the weight of truth just fail.
You fell to ground, your life blood spilled,
Your young and precious body chilled.
You gasped and begged, you pleaded loud,
Above the dark and angry crowd.
“I CAN’T BREATHE” your desperate cry,
Rose to the stars and up to sky.
“I CAN’T BREATHE” you called for aid,
As hope and strength began to fade.
But when the officers arrived,
They did not see how barely alive.
You lay there broken, bleeding and weak
Instead they chose that lie to seek.
They heard his claim, they took his side,
Ignored the pain in which you cried.
They put the cuffs upon your hands,
They did not heed your last demands.
Arrested you while life ran out,
Silenced every gasping shout.
You slipped away, alone, afraid,
While justice turned its face and strayed.
Now you are gone, Henry, so young,
Your song of life so swiftly sung.
We hold your memory deep and true,
And we know exactly what they did to you.
We hear the cry you gave that night,
I CAN’T BREATHE burns with bright light.
May you rest in peace, sweet soul,
Who paid so high a heavy toll.
We will not let your story die,
Nor let the lies obscure the sky
The United Kingdom will never let your memory die, Your name will live, your truth will fly.
Through every town and every street,
Your legacy we will proudly meet,
For you were ours, so young and brave,
And justice yet shall mark your grave.
