SATURDAY IN STIRLING — THE RUNNERS ARE UP, THE REST OF US ARE STILL NEGOTIATING WITH THE DUVET.

It’s a cloudy, breezy one, around 12°C, with a shower or two possible. Autumn jacket: on. Hair: at the mercy of the wind.

A huge welcome to everyone taking part in the William Wallace Running Festival today from the 70K and 50K to the 10K and wee mile. You’re all legends! If you’re out and about, give the runners a cheer. It might be just the boost they need when their legs start asking questions.

THE WILLIAM WALLACE RUNNING FESTIVAL

When you are still tucked up in bed tomorrow, the 70km runners will already be off at 7am. The 50km runners start at 7:45am—some folks really do have a different idea of a Saturday morning!

The 10km starts at 9:45am and the 1-mile fun run at 9:55am.

A wee bit of festival history, the festival is new. It launched in Stirling in 2025, created by local event team You Can Sport with Scurry Events. The routes showcase places linked to William Wallace and Stirling’s past, including Stirling Old Bridge, Bannockburn, Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument. MND Scotland was the festival’s charity partner for its launch.

The Council notification lists the event period as 6am to noon. The 50km and 70km races can continue later, with a 9pm cut-off.

The event has no specific road closure notice. The organiser says the routes use open roads and shared paths, and marshals cannot stop traffic. Please drive carefully, watch for runners and allow extra time.

Athletes are asked not to park at The Peak or Morrisons. Please follow the event parking guidance and use permitted spaces.

If you’re passing the runners, give them a wee cheer—it might be just the boost they need!

NEARLY THE WEEKEND, STIRLING!

A wee look at what’s coming up: Cala and Hansel & Gretel tonight, Shooglenifty and Celine on Friday, then Martin Taylor and The Scottish Pink Floyd on Saturday.

Tonight, the National Wallace Monument will light up purple and blue for Forth Valley Sensory Centre’s 20th anniversary. The Centre supports people with sight or hearing loss across Forth Valley, offering advice, services and social activities to help people live as independently as possible.

Lovely as the autumn and winter sun can be, it can make driving much harder.

At this time of year, the sun sits lower in the sky for longer — especially in the morning and late afternoon, right when many people are travelling to work, school or home. That low sun can shine straight through the windscreen or mirrors, causing glare and making it harder to see the road ahead, pedestrians, cyclists, traffic lights and vehicles braking in front of you.

On a misty day, take even more care. Mist can reduce how far ahead you can see, while the low sun can reflect and scatter through it — making the glare feel even stronger and creating bright patches where hazards are difficult to spot.

A few wee reminders:

* Give yourself extra time and slow down if visibility is poor.
* Keep a bigger gap from the vehicle in front.
* Make sure your windscreen is clean inside and out — smears make sun glare worse.
* Keep sunglasses handy, but never let them replace proper caution.
* Use dipped headlights when visibility is reduced; don’t rely on daytime running lights alone.
* Watch carefully for people crossing the road, particularly near schools, bus stops and junctions.

The sun may look lovely, but a low winter sun and mist can change the road in seconds. Take care out there, Stirling. ☀️🌫️🚗

GOOD MORNING STIRLING!

It’s a proper chilly Scottish autumn morning — the kind that makes sitting somewhere cosy with a bacon roll and a big mug of something hot seem like the only sensible plan.

Find your favourite wee café, grab a comfy seat and enjoy a bit of warmth before facing the day.

There are plenty of brilliant local cafés around Stirling and the surrounding villages, so why not make this morning an excuse to visit one of your favourites — or try somewhere new?

Don’t worry — the public will have another opportunity to object once the fare is set and published for one calendar month. However, sharing your views now may help ensure our councillors listen to you the first time around.

The trade will have only 14 days to appeal to the Transport Commissioner once the councillors confirm the fare.

Tonight, Mrs Indy will be popping into the amazing The Golden Lion Hotel Stirling to attend the Courier roadshow. You need to register your attendance, but it’s free to attend.

FINAL REMINDER — HAVE YOUR SAY ON STIRLING TAXI FARES

The Stirling Taxi Fare Review 2026 consultation closes tomorrow — Wednesday 7 October.

Quick reminder: Stirling Council hasn’t invested in a mind-reading machine yet.

So thinking “that’s too expensive”, “I agree with it” or “I’d change that” unfortunately won’t make its way into the consultation.

And neither will leaving your thoughts underneath a Facebook post!

If you want your views counted, you need to actually submit them through the consultation.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve broken down the proposals, looked at the figures and highlighted some of the questions surrounding the proposed tariff changes.

The proposals include:

🔴 Increases to Tariffs 1, 2 and 3
🔴 New festive Tariffs 4 and 5
🔴 Changes to the distance travelled for each 10p meter increment
🔴 No proposed change to the waiting-time charge

This consultation is open to everyone — not just taxi drivers and operators.

If you use taxis in Stirling, these proposals could affect what you pay, so take a few minutes to read them and tell the Council what you think.

There are also areas worth looking closely at, including how the proposed festive tariffs interact with existing holiday tariffs and why the proposed festive periods finish at 6am.

A friendly reminder about taxi rank spaces

We are aware our trade are causing ongoing problems and appropriate council teams have been and continued to be contacted to try and resolve these issues.

This is a general reminder, not aimed at naming or shaming any driver or company. Please check the signs before parking or waiting in a taxi rank, so the spaces remain available for taxis serving passengers.

Before Station Road taxi rank closed last week, Stirling had 18 city-centre taxi rank spaces for a fleet of more than 200 taxis. Since its closure, four spaces have been lost, leaving just 14. At the moment, we’ve had no further confirmation from Stirling Council’s Roads team about adding more taxi rank spaces.

Parking restrictions depend on the signs, traffic order and enforcement arrangements. A breach may result in a parking penalty; council PCNs can be up to £100, usually reduced by 50% if paid within 14 days.

Picking someone up or dropping them off at Stirling station? Please use the signed pick-up/drop-off point in their carpark. Did you know you get up to 30mins before paying in the Station carpark.
