Don't waste money on fuel at secondary European airports without running this comparison first.
You're more than likely paying more than you need to. Here's the gap:
Most operators assume they are paying a competitive price for fuel at secondary European airports.

Most are not. They are paying whatever the FBO charges, because that is the path of least resistance and nobody has compared it against anything.

The gap between the FBO default rate and the actual market rate at secondary airports is wider than operators expect. And because fuel is rarely scrutinised the way other cost lines are, it compounds quietly across a full schedule.

Swipe to see where the difference comes from and how Fuelworx closes it.

Most operators know fuel is their largest variable cost. Fewer treat it like one.

A variable cost gets managed. It gets compared against the market. It gets scrutinised when the invoice does not match the quote. It gets planned across a full schedule rather than handled sector by sector as each trip comes in.

What most operators actually do is accept the quote from the supplier they have always used, pay the invoice when it arrives, and move on. It works until it does not. A price spike. A supply issue at a regular airport. A reconciliation that raises questions nobody can answer because nobody checked the rate at the time.

Managing fuel strategically does not require a dedicated procurement team. It requires pricing visibility before the commitment and a network wide enough to produce genuine competition.

That is what Fuelworx provides. 100+ suppliers worldwide. Real-time pricing. Free quotations.

The UK SAF Mandate took effect on 1 January 2025.

It starts at 2% of total UK jet fuel demand this year, rising to 10% by 2030 and 22% by 2040.

SAF costs more than conventional jet fuel. As the obligation steps up year on year, that differential feeds through into what operators pay, regardless of whether they are actively sourcing SAF or sticking with conventional uplifts.

At most UK airports the cost is already showing up in pricing. At some it isn't yet, but it will.

Most fuel budgets were built before this was a material line.

For UK operations, it now is, and the exposure compounds every year the percentage rises.

Fuelworx gives operators real-time pricing visibility across 100+ suppliers, so regulatory cost shifts show up in the quote before they show up on the invoice.

Fuel is one of the largest variable costs in any operation. Most of the overspending is avoidable.

These are the mistakes we see most often:

Accepting the handler's price without checking the market. The FBO price is rarely the most competitive option at any given airport. It is simply the most convenient one. Convenience has a cost.

Planning fuel stops based on habit rather than current pricing. Regular routes breed assumptions. The airport that offered competitive pricing 18 months ago may not today. Markets move; procurement habits often do not.

Treating each leg as an isolated fuel decision. Operators who optimise fuel across the full itinerary, accounting for tankering opportunities, pricing differentials between stops, and alternate requirements, consistently outperform those who plan sector by sector.

No visibility until reconciliation. Discovering a pricing discrepancy after the flight has departed is not fuel management. It is accounting. The decision-making window has already closed.

Single supplier dependency. When a primary supplier is unavailable, operators without alternatives make rushed decisions under pressure. Rushed fuel procurement is rarely cost-effective.

The common thread across all five is information, specifically, the lack of it at the moment it matters.

The Fuelworx portal gives operators real-time pricing across 100+ suppliers worldwide, before commitment rather than after.

Fuel is available at thousands of airports worldwide. Knowing whether you are paying the right price at any of them is a different problem entirely.

Most operators manage fuel procurement through a mix of established supplier relationships, handling agent defaults, and occasional spot quotes when something looks expensive. It works, up to a point. But it leaves a persistent question unanswered: what was the market rate, and how far off it were you?

The Fuelworx portal was built to answer that question before the decision is made, not after.

One login. Real-time pricing across a global network of 100+ suppliers. Transparent cost breakdowns so the price on screen is the price you pay, without reconciliation surprises. And the ability to compare, select, and confirm fuel arrangements across multiple airports on a single itinerary in the time it would previously have taken to get one quote back by email.

For operators managing multiple legs, multiple aircraft, or simply a high volume of international movements, the cumulative saving is significant. But the more immediate value is clarity. Knowing the market. Making informed decisions. Not wondering afterwards whether there was a better option.

The portal is free to access. The pricing intelligence is immediate.

The same fuel. The same aircraft. A price difference of more than 40%.

Jet fuel in the US currently averages $6.42 per gallon nationally, but operators in the Central region are paying around $5.69 whilst those in Alaska are paying over $8.00. That gap exists within one country, on one fuel type, on a single day. Across international operations, spanning different suppliers, currencies, handling arrangements, and tax structures, the variance is considerably wider.

Most operators know fuel prices vary. Far fewer know by exactly how much, or what they paid relative to what was available at the time.

That is not a small problem. Fuel typically accounts for 30 to 40% of the variable cost of an international operation. A consistent overpayment of even a few percent compounds quickly across a fleet or a busy schedule. The difficulty is that without real-time market visibility, there is no reliable way to know whether the price on any given invoice was competitive or simply what the supplier chose to charge.

That is the gap Fuelworx closes.

Real-time pricing across a network of 100+ suppliers worldwide. Transparent cost breakdowns before commitment, not after. The ability to compare options across every airport on an itinerary in the time it would previously have taken to receive a single quote by email.

The portal is free to access. The pricing intelligence is immediate.

Since 28 February, the cost of jet fuel has risen by more than 50%.

US-Israeli strikes on Iran triggered immediate airspace closures across the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and surrounding states.

The Strait of Hormuz, which normally carries around 20% of global oil supply, saw tanker traffic decline by an estimated 70 to 80%. Oil prices jumped 15% to above $105 a barrel, with Brent crude futures at one point surging as much as 29%.

For operators with flights through or around the region, the consequences have been immediate: forced reroutes, additional fuel stops, and procurement costs that bear no resemblance to what was planned even a fortnight ago.

Industry estimates suggest that rerouting a single long-haul flight can add 90 to 120 minutes of flying time, with the operating cost impact reaching $6,000 to $7,500 per additional flight hour.

Across a busy schedule, that compounds quickly.

The operators absorbing this best are not the ones with the largest fuel budgets. They are the ones with real-time pricing visibility across multiple suppliers, alternative procurement arrangements already in place, and the ability to make informed decisions as the market moves rather than after the invoice arrives.

This is precisely the situation the Fuelworx portal was built for. Real-time pricing across a global network of 100+ suppliers, so market disruption informs your decisions rather than ambushes them.
