Sleeping on a boat sounds romantic until your hip, shoulder, lower back, and one mysterious rib all demand separate negotiations by 2 a.m. The younger version of you could sleep anywhere. The sailor version of you now rotates like meat on a spit and calls it “night watch.”

Boat berths have a way of revealing every joint you’ve ever used. Add a little swell, a narrow cushion, a lee cloth, and the occasional locker handle in the wrong place, and suddenly sleeping becomes a small athletic event performed in pajamas.

Still, there’s something oddly comforting about waking up aboard. Even after a night of turning over every fifteen minutes, you hear water against the hull, feel the boat moving gently, and remember that this ridiculous floating bed is somehow exactly where you want to be.
