72010 Hengist The Standard Steam Locomotive Company Ltd. A voluntary organisation building a 'lost class' BR Standard Class 6 'Clan' for mainline and heritage railways. Ltd.

The Standard Steam Locomotive Co. is building a brand new BR Standard Class 6 'Clan' locomotive. The locomotive will carry the number 72010 and name 'Hengist', the next Clan due to be built by BR under lot 242 before world steel shortages and the modernisation plan cancelled further builds. It is believed that 72010's frame plates were cut by BR but subsequently scrapped without ever being used. H

engist is being built for mainline use in the UK as well as visits to heritage railways. It is also intended that the loco will be improved as per the lot 242 drawings, and also incorporate further performance improvements.

The driver's reverser control is linked to a long transmission tube that runs from the cab to the motion bracket on the left-hand side of the frames. The tube is very similar to an automotive propeller shaft in that it has universal joints at each end. Each end of the tube has to be bolted to a Hardy Spicer drive fl**ge. We had one drive fl**ge in stock but were missing the other. Hardy Spicer in Australia were very helpful in pointing us towards International Marketing Services in Birmingham, who were able to supply us with a generic drive fl**ge that could be machined to match the drive fl**ge we had in stock. This job has been completed by Alpenbury Precision Engineering in Parkgate, Rotherham, who have produced the completed fl**ge on the right. They also produced 2 keys for the reverser shafts, one of which is on the left

This is one of the housings for the reverser control in the cab. This housing is close to the operating handwheel. The 2 lugs top right (with luggage label attached) are for fitting the locking catch, which holds the handwheel in position. We need to drill 4 oilways/breather holes into the curved area top left. These holes are at 90 degree intervals around the central bush and are angled at 30 degrees to the centre line. Diamond Engineering have loaned us this angle jig. This allows us to set the housing at the correct angle so we can drill down vertically into the housing.

On the right, you can see the steam manifold which sits on the top of the firebox, just in front of the cab. The manifold was procured in the early days of the project, so it has just gone through Positive Material Identification, and we now know what it is made from.

We had a great visit last week, from Francesca Trevelyan of The Worshipful Company of Ironmongers. After a short presentation and a tour of the Locomotive, we showed her the two rear end cylinder covers that The Worshipful Company of Ironmongers funded last year. This is one of Hengist's coupled wheel axles. It is just over 1.6 metres in length and is 228.6mm in diameter at the ends. Today's job was to confirm key dimensions as part of our checking process. The axle has been protected with a combination of grease impregnated tape and preservative oil. Underneath John's left hand is the seat where the taper roller bearing will fit; under his right hand is the seat for the coupled wheel. On 72010, all of the axles are the same. On a Britannia, the centre driving axle is a bigger diameter as this was a more powerful locomotive.

All checks passed successfully and the axle has been returned to its box.When we are getting close to wheelset assembly, we will be painting the axle (apart from the seating areas) with oil resistant paint.

** Volunteer Opportunity** Senior Engineer / Railway Engineering Lead

The Standard Steam Locomotive Company, a registered charity, is seeking a passionate and experienced Senior Engineer / Railway Engineer to help lead our exciting new-build project for the 'lost' BR Standard Class 6 locomotive, 72010 Hengist.

This is a unique opportunity to play a leading role in one of the most significant heritage railway engineering projects in the UK and help create a lasting legacy within the preservation movement.

This is an engineering led project and you will be working alongside a dedicated team of engineers, suppliers, and volunteers at the Hengist Works based within Diamond Group, Sheffield; the successful candidate will help drive the project forward through its next stages of construction. We hope this individual will eventually take on a wider leadership role within the organisation, including becoming a Director and joining the Council of Management.
