Hauliers Defend Themselves in HGV

Driver Pay Row 💬

Hauliers across the UK are pushing back after being accused of fuelling the HGV driver shortage through "greed" and low wages. 🚫💷

Drivers recently slammed employers for paying "peanuts", but operators say the real issue is spiralling costs — not stinginess. 📈💸

Michael Doherty of Doherty Group pointed out that trucks now cost up to £60k more than four years ago, with timber crane trailers rising by £40k. Add rising diesel prices, tax hikes, and employer costs — and it’s no wonder some firms are folding or selling up. 🏗️⛽📉

Justin Hyde from Mastermac Haulage says hauliers are surviving on razor-thin margins: “We’re lucky to make 3%. Most run at a loss.” 😓📊

Even high-value loads like whisky aren’t profitable. “A 300-mile job for £450? It’s madness,” he said. 🥃🚛🛣️

Meanwhile, Craig Foster of CLF Commercials believes some drivers are exploiting the shortage: “They jump ship for a small pay rise — but the industry simply can’t afford it.” 💼➡️💷

The message from hauliers? The numbers just don’t stack up. Something’s got to give. 📉🤯
