A few words about a person who has a double celebration this summer. He is well known to regular visitors to the museum and a good friend to all who work or are volunteers in it.
I’m talking about Graham Turner or GT for short, who later this month is eighty years young and it is also twenty years this summer since his first visit to what is now the Scarborough Fair Collection & Vintage Transport Museum.
Around that time Graham Atkinson the owner of the Flower of May Holiday Park had purchased a Wurlitzer Organ with all its pipes and bits and pieces to put in his new ballroom at his new museum (this is the Wurlitzer on the stage in the ballroom).
Back in 2006 Graham Turner was a sixty year old electrical engineer and a partner of a small electrical company at Scarborough. A friend of GT’s had the task of installing the Wurlitzer and putting it all together and he knew GT was the ideal person to help him to wire and ‘pipe’ it up.
It was a major task which took months to complete. This was partly because Graham along with only a couple of other people helping him could only give their time at weekends.
Graham Atkinson’s collection was quickly growing with a view to one day opening it to the public as a working museum and GT had well and truly caught the nostalgia bug. He continued to visit the museum in his own time after 2006 to finish the Wurlitzer and found it was a never ending job in the museum with other exhibits being added to it all the time and so he has kept up with his volunteering visits to the museum ever since.
As the years went by Graham began to give up more of his free time and twenty years later he is still not finished fixing things. he always had an interest in old organs which lead to him eventually becoming first the Treasurer, then the Secretary and finally the Chairman of the Scarborough Electronic Organ Society

As I have already mentioned when GT first visited Graham Atkinson’s collection in 2006 there were plans to open this ever growing collection and two years later in 2008 the Scarborough Fair Collection was officially open to the public.
I first walked into the museum in the spring of 2015 and just like all the other volunteers who have been and gone over the years I had one thing in common with them all, it was Graham Turner who showed me the ropes.
You will see from the photos there is one of Graham in a tight part of the organ chamber and another of him in the middle of winter concentrating when making dozens of thin leather gaskets and other parts for the Wurlitzer. The Wurlitzer in bits and then one of a proud Graham when he had finished the job. This was a job that took all winter even though there were two people doing it. The three shady looking characters are Clive on the right who sadly passed away, Graham in the middle and yours truly (Keith) on the left. Of course it wasn’t all work and we nearly had to lift GT out of that Sinclair C5.
Lastly we see a happy Graham in the museum and I am sure that later this month everybody at the SFC&VTM as well as visitors to the museum will be wishing him a very Happy Birthday and hope he enjoys his special day with lots more like it to come.
