🥕 Giant Stories, Episode 2: More Than a Pantry

Tucked inside the Old Sarum and Longhedge Pantry Sarum Community Centre is a place that's quietly become a lifeline for hundreds of local families — and this year it's a BBC Wiltshire Make a Difference Awards finalist.

The Old Sarum & Longhedge Pantry isn't just about affordable food shopping (though it does that brilliantly — members shop on a simple points system for a few pounds a week). It's a warm space for parents who can't afford the heating. A chatty café where pensioners can share a coffee without worrying about the cost. A safe, judgement-free place for anyone having a tough week.

Their members list includes NHS staff, teachers, social workers, and military families — hardworking people who don't meet the threshold for other support but are still struggling to make ends meet. Their ethos says it all: no one should just "survive."

We're proud to stand behind the Pantry team as part of our charity partner network here in Salisbury. Massive congratulations on the BBC Wiltshire recognition — thoroughly deserved. 💚

September brings a specific kind of storage question: a student heading to university, or moving into a new house share, suddenly has a spare room's worth of furniture, boxes, or a full car boot that just won't fit into halls or a shared house.

That's exactly what our 8ft containers are for. At £115 a month, an 8ft comfortably holds the contents of a single room — bed frame, boxes, a desk, sports kit that has no place in a student flat. There's no minimum term, so if plans change after Christmas, seven days' notice is all it takes to walk away.

We see a lot of parents booking on a student's behalf, and they appreciate not being tied into a long contract when term dates or accommodation plans can shift at short notice, especially in that first year.

🌍 Giant Stories, Episode 1: 350kg, One Container, One Mission

Last week our High Post yard looked a little different. A group of local students turned up not to store their own belongings, but to pack someone else's future.

Working alongside Footprints 2 Africa, they spent the day sorting and boxing ostomy, continence, and menstrual care supplies — donated by people right here in Wiltshire — ready to make the journey to hospitals and healthcare partners in Zimbabwe.

By the end of the day: 350kg packed. One container, one step closer to making a real difference for people who need these supplies most.

This is what our charity container programme is really about — not just free space, but a place where things like this can happen. Huge thanks to the students, to Zelda and the Footprints 2 Africa team, and to everyone who's donated so far.
