After a great time over on The Scillies for the World Pilot Gig Championships, we were straight back into the workshop getting ready for the first CPGA inspection on the new build in the workshop. Pleased to say we got the nod to start planking!

And calm returns.

We’ve not posted for a while. We’ve been pretty busy over the winter so there’s lots to catch up on and there’s some exciting things happening in the workshop. For now, here’s a video of us adding the finishing touches to our big winter project which I’m sure many people out there will recognise.

A few before and after photos of one of the more challenging repairs we’ve recently undertaken. This boat was showing signs of a drop along the keel. The garboard plank hand taken on a curve along the overlap and the frames had been wedged up off the keel to accommodate the dip. As a result a gap had also opened up along the devils seem and the cotton caulking was falling out and the plank was showing signs of splitting along the fixing lines as they tried to hold plank onto the keel. We’ve removed the garboard plank along a long length of the keel where there was light showing. Once removed, we also removed the packers between the frames and keel and gradually wedged up the keel so that the frames meet the keel once again. Once we were happy with everything, we replaced the garboard with a new plank and added fixings to hold everything in place. There are still a few fixings to put in, but this repairs in nearing completion. All that’s left after the this is to re-paint the boat, ready to be used once again.

Repairs anyone? After a summer of racing and training, a lot of our kit gets put away for a little rest and TLC until the racing calendar kicks in again. If your equipment is in need of any repairs, get in touch. We still have slots open for little and small projects over the winter.

We’re currently working on a truly unique project! This gig has recently passed into private ownership and the new owners want to see it bought back to life after spend the first 50+ years of its life as a well used and loved club boat. As you can imagine, there is a bit of work to be done and some interesting tasks ahead. So far we’ve replaced a few frames and just finished scrapping back all the interior paint. It’s amazing to see that the planking timber is still in great condition after all these years. The next job will be interesting as we try to close the gap between the keel and garboard plank. Can anyone guess the name of the boat and for a bonus point, what number is it?

The exciting stages of seeing the pictures on the screen to holding the physical object have started. Initially, we’ve carved out the first half to get an idea of the lines and make sure we’re happy. Although this hasn’t had its final touches, we’re really pleased to see the planking lines clear and visible into the stem. After a few tweaks, we’re now ready to try a full model. The models are going to be approximately 2ft and made from elm and will be sold either painted in club colours, varnished or left for you to finish painting yourselves.
