HGV Mechanic?
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Truck and Trailer Mechanic to join our team.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong mechanical background with experience in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining various types of trailers and heavy equipment.
This role requires a commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and excellent customer service.
The garage operates over 7 days, days only.
The shifts we are looking to cover are ideally 4 on 4 off but would also consider a combination of Monday to Friday / Tuesday to Saturday / Sunday to Thursday
4 on 4 off start time would be 0600 - 1800
Pay
Minimum earnings of £18.00 per hour with potential to earn up to £22.00 per hour depending on experience and licences.
Duties
Perform diagnostics and repairs on trailer systems including braking systems, hydraulics, suspension, and electrical components using Jaltest or equivelent.
Conduct routine maintenance on trailers and heavy equipment to ensure optimal performance.
Utilize hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment for repairs and fabrication tasks.
Execute brake repair, brake tests, alignment services, and transmission work as needed.
Prepare vehicles for MOT.
Maintain accurate records of repairs and services performed on each unit.
Collaborate with team members to ensure efficient workflow and high-quality service delivery.
Provide exceptional customer service by communicating effectively with clients regarding repairs and maintenance needs.
Qualifications
Previous mechanic experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair is required; dealership experience is a plus.
Recognised qualification (e.g. City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3, or equivalent) in Heavy Vehicle / Commercial Vehicle Maintenance
Minimum 2–3 years’ experience working on HGVs or large commercial vehicles.
Good mechanical and electrical diagnostic ability.
Ability to read technical manuals and wiring diagrams.
Basic computer literacy (for job records, diagnostics).
Willingness to work flexibly (shifts, overtime, call‑outs).
Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and adherence to workshop procedures.
Strong mechanical knowledge of diesel engine repair, industrial equipment, and tractor-trailer systems.
Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment for automotive repair.
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Excellent communication skills with a focus on customer service.
Electrical experience and soldering skills are beneficial for this role.
Other desirable advantages:
IRTEC / IMI accreditation.
Experience with specific brands (e.g. Mercedes / DAF).
Full HGV driving licence (C / C+E).
Previous experience in a dealership workshop environment.
Knowledge of vehicle emissions systems, telematics, CAN – BUS systems.
