With refrigerated containers, delivery is only one part of the process. Once the unit is on site, commissioning helps make sure the container is correctly connected, set up and ready for the customer to use safely.

This includes checking the power supply, setting the required temperature, running through the controls, explaining airflow, and giving basic guidance on how to get the best performance from the unit.

At Bosh Boxes, we don’t just deliver the container and leave the customer guessing. We make sure the handover is clear, practical and properly explained.

Buying a 20ft shipping container in the UK? Here is what actually matters.

Why 20ft is the most common UK choice:

Internal space: around 33 cubic metres
Holds around 10 UK pallets
Length: about 6 metres
Empty weight: around 2,200kg
Fits residential driveways, tight urban sites, farms, small business yards

Pricing:

Used 20ft container: £875 to £1,100 + VAT
New one-trip 20ft container: £1,900 to £2,100 + VAT

Used vs new in plain English:

Used: wind and watertight, cosmetic wear, fine for site storage or workshops
New one-trip: near-new condition, cleaner appearance, longer expected lifespan, good for conversions and visible locations

Common buyer use cases:

Construction site storage
Farm equipment storage
Retail stock storage
Workshop or conversion projects
Secure household storage and house moves

Will a 20ft fit a house move? Usually yes for a 2 to 3 bedroom property. A larger home or full-house contents may need two 20fts or a 40ft.

Things buyers underestimate:

Delivery access: HIAB or sidelifter, road width, overhead cables, turning space
Ground prep: level support under the four corners (concrete blocks, sleepers, paving slabs)
Future moves: containers cannot be shuffled by hand, plan the position properly first time

A well-maintained 20ft container can last 15 to 25 years.

Buying a 40ft shipping container in the UK? Here is the short version.

7 steps to get the right one:

1. Decide what the container will be used for
2. Choose new or used
3. Confirm dimensions and weight
4. Understand realistic UK pricing
5. Check delivery access and ground prep
6. Choose a reliable supplier
7. Arrange delivery and offloading

Real numbers:

Used 40ft container: £1,300 to £1,500 + VAT
New one-trip 40ft container: £2,800 to £3,500 + VAT
Empty weight: 3,700 to 4,000kg
Fully loaded: can exceed 30,000kg
Internal volume: around 67 cubic metres (~20 UK pallets)

Standard 40ft is 8ft 6in tall. High cube is 9ft 6in, giving an extra 30cm of internal height for tall machinery, racked pallets, or conversions.

Things buyers underestimate:

HIAB lorry delivering a 40ft is around 68ft long with outriggers needing 10 to 12ft of clearance
Ground must be level and support 30+ tonnes when fully loaded
Foundations: concrete pads, railway sleepers under corner castings, or compacted hardcore
Buy from a supplier who inspects every unit and guarantees wind and watertight

A well-maintained 40ft container can last 20 to 30 years.

Can you deliver a shipping container into my garden?

It’s a question we get asked all the time.

In many cases, a shipping container can be delivered into a garden, but it depends on the access, lifting space, ground conditions, and container size.

Some of the main things we need to check are:
- What size container is being delivered?
- Are there any overhead cables, trees, or obstructions?
- How far does the container need to be lifted?
- Where can the lorry safely park?
- Is the ground firm and level enough?

These are just some of the points to consider when planning garden container delivery.

How much does a 20ft refrigerated container cost in the UK?

Quick answer:

Used 20ft re**er: £4,500 to £7,500
New 20ft re**er: from £18,995

What changes the price:

Condition: used vs new (one-trip)
Refrigeration unit: Carrier, Thermo King, Starcool, Daikin
Age and service history of the unit
Delivery access on site
Temperature requirements (chilled vs freezer)

Domestic spec vs standard:

Standard new re**er: from £18,995
Domestic spec adds internal lighting, panic alarm, PVC strip curtains, and a loading ramp. These cost more but make the unit much easier to use day to day for catering, schools, and events.

Costs buyers often forget:

Delivery (HIAB or sidelifter)
3-phase power supply on site
Commissioning by a qualified engineer
Electricity and ongoing servicing

Used vs new in plain English:

Used re**er: lower upfront cost, fine for short to medium-term storage
New re**er: higher cost, longer lifespan, lower breakdown risk, better for long-term cold storage

Most refrigerated containers can be delivered in 7 to 10 days in the UK depending on access and spec.

How do refrigerated containers actually work?

A re**er container is a shipping container with a built-in refrigeration unit. It removes heat from inside the unit and pushes conditioned air around the cargo to hold a stable temperature, usually between -25C and +25C.

The cooling cycle:

Compressor pressurises refrigerant gas
Condenser cools that gas into liquid
Evaporator absorbs heat from inside the container
Internal fans circulate the cold air through floor channels

Cooling the air is only half the job. The other half is making sure that cold air actually reaches every part of the load.

Why loading matters more than buyers think:

Stack too tightly and airflow is blocked
Block the floor vents and cold air cannot circulate
Hot spots, uneven cooling, and spoilage risk all start with bad loading

Power matters too. Most re**ers run on 3-phase electrical supply from mains, port, ship power, or a generator set. Always check site power before ordering for static storage.

Common UK uses:

Food and drink
Pharmaceuticals and medical
Flowers, plants, and fresh produce
Event catering and seasonal stock
Temporary cold storage on commercial sites
