A word of caution on using AI for engine info ⚠️

I had a call today from a chap asking what the squish test figure should be on his Rotax 582. It's not a race engine and it isn't something Rotax asks for in the 582 manuals, so I asked where he'd got it from. The answer was AI.

So I tried it myself. Google's AI happily told me the 582 solder squish test should be 1.0–1.5 mm, in bold, with a source link next to it so it looked properly referenced.

When I asked whether that was actually a Rotax requirement or generic two-stroke information, it admitted straight away that it wasn't in the Rotax manuals. It had borrowed the procedure from dirt bikes, snowmobiles and kart engines.

The worrying part is how convincing the first answer looked. If you didn't already know, you'd have no reason to doubt it, and you could end up skimming heads or changing gaskets to chase a number that doesn't exist.

AI can be handy, but for anything going into your engine, check the Rotax manual for your engine type, or give someone who works on them a ring. Happy to help if you're unsure.

The website's had a bit of a night shift 🛠️

This one's been a long time coming. I started the interactive parts diagrams months ago, got a chunk of the 912 done, then wandered off to build a Rotax service bulletin checker instead — as you do — and there it sat. Well, it's finished.

If you've ever scrolled through a parts list wondering which of the four near-identical washers you actually need: every figure from the Rotax illustrated parts catalogues is now on the shop as an interactive diagram. Click the number on the drawing, the part pops up with the price and stock, and you can add it straight to your basket. No more cross-referencing part numbers with one eye on the manual.

That's the 912 UL/ULS, 914, 912 iS, 915, 916 — and yes, the 582 as well.

There's a fair bit behind it: the full parts catalogue is now listed, right down to the individual O-rings, sealing rings and the bolts everyone loses. Where two versions of a part exist you get the choice on screen — silicone or standard hose, stainless or mild steel exhaust springs, Faston or Tyco coil connectors — with the prices side by side. Anything on backorder can be ordered as normal, and you can ask to be notified when it lands.

Apologies for the breathing I have man flu, a new quicker way to check on applicable service bullitens for your engine, hoping to add a section were you can search spare part serial numbers in the near future so if you’ve had, say a new gearbox fitted you can just look up the gearbox part number. This will only be live for about 3 hours or mail the gateway to the site is fully in place.

⚠️ Rotax has issued a MANDATORY Alert Service Bulletin — ASB-2026-002, dated 03 September 2026.
It calls for replacement of the turbocharger valve housing on 915 i and 916 i series engines, after cracking and insufficient wall thickness were traced to a supplier manufacturing fault. The risk is an oil leak onto hot exhaust components — smoke, and in the worst case an engine bay fire.
Affected engines and turbochargers are listed by serial number in the bulletin’s appendix. Installed engines must be done before next flight, and no later than a year from issue.

912 series engines are not affected.
