Kids Go Free in August
Following extensive discussions with the DfT, they are unable to adequately fund us for joining the scheme. There is a significant shortfall of around 2/3rds of the anticipated revenue over this period.
As a result we will NOT be participating. Normal fares will be charged.

We were more than happy to participate in the scheme and even agreed to a small revenue loss as a result of the positive benefits schemes such as this deliver.
We also firmly believe the DfT should be supporting services which operate at school times. Services to schools, works and special services (such as our service to Thorpe Park) are excluded from UK Gov support.
Thorpe Park was excluded in the T&Cs as its deemed a 'special service'. We pointed out to the DfT that the scheme was intended to promote leisure travel and Thorpe Park is an ideal leisure destination.
This aside we entered into significant dialog with the DfT including providing them with details of the revenue take last August so they could estimate funding. We also accept the offer is not going to be 100% of the revenue received last year at the same time.
However the final offer was received on Wednesday evening and its derisory. This comes at a time when fuel costs are significantly high. We cannot accept such a significant loss of revenue over this period.
Despite the rhetoric, bus service margins are very tight and if bus services are to be maintained going forward they need to be adequately funded.

We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause.

Contact us on our e-mail [email protected] and we will be more than happy to explain further.

Governments Children go free offer for August.

We are currently attempting to communicate with the DfT over the student fares offer announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer on the 20th May.
Although theres a snag! The DfTs contractors did not communicate with us until after the very tight deadline had passed. We are now in receipt of the DfTs T&Cs. School travel of which they will be none in August is exempt.

However despite the scheme being promoted to encourage leisure travel, services deemed by the Government as leisure services are specifically excluded from the scheme. This includes our services to Thorpe Park and any connecting services such as route 306 which has through fares between Borehamwood & Thorpe Park.

So as it stands currently, unless the DfT change the T&Cs we will be excluded for claiming for our Thorpe Park services and route 306 which has linked through fares.

Therefore regretfully we will not be able to participate in the scheme during August and normal child fares will need to be charged.

Fare Revision from 29th August.
Fares will be revised by around 10% (Subject to rounding) from the 29th August. This is higher than we would have liked, but has been caused by significant increases in fuel costs as a result the troubles in the Middle East. The long-term future costs of fuel remains uncertain.
Over the last 6 months we have seen our fuel costs increase by over 35%. Fuel is one of our largest costs only exceeded by staff costs. It is not possible to absorb this cost if services are to be maintained.

The Government do not financially support services that run at school times. All costs of the operation are funded by users of the service. As a result Student fares on routes 303, 306A, 330, 331, 346, 347, 354, 355, 356, 358, 397, 832, and 833 will increase by 10% on the base adult fare subject to rounding.

Route 951 (Watford – Thorpe Park) is not supported by the Government as this is deemed a leisure service. As a result the £3 fare cap does not apply.

The base adult fares on routes 84, 306 and 398 which are supported by Government but subject to the £3 fare cap will rise 10% below the fare cap. The £3 Fare cap will remain.

Child fares are based on 2/3rds of the uncapped adult fare or ½ of the uncapped adult single fare with a valid Savercard. Note: in line with the Governments scheme, if an adult fare is (say) £4 and subject to the £3 fare cap on routes 84, 306 & 398, the Child & Savercard Fare is based on the uncapped adult fare.
In this example the Savercard Fare would be one half the uncapped adult fare = £2. Once the £3 fare cap is reached – unfortunately both Adult & Child fares will align.
