PART #1
This was the day I bought 🐮“AUCH AYE THE MOO” 🐮 and what an epic week ahead it was going to be..
It was on May 15th 2024 at roughly 15:45, when I first turned those ignition keys.
🚤The trip to come - her first trip with me in command was over 600 nautical miles! Southampton to port Glasgow… AYE ENGLAND TO GLASGOW 😳
Iv told this story if not 999 times Iv told it more than 1000 times now.
So here it goes…
The first day we traveled to get the boat, at the time she was named GMT. Short for Golf Mike Tango.
Myself and 4 guys were traveling to go collect her and bring her back from Plymouth.
It was an exciting day and we were flying down to Plymouth direct from
Glasgow.
Long story short, we went for a “coffee” some people chose to have a breakfast, the TVs that show the flight departure gates at the time (we didn’t realise) were not working and had stuck, it wasn’t showing the gates it just said - gate to show soon!
Any how…
Due to the breakfasts that were ordered, we ended up missing the flight.
Nightmare I know, so next flight rebooked this time to London, hire car to Plymouth then on to collect the boat.
We were already 6 hours late for our departure…
My stress levels were high and my planning had already been chucked out the window!
Anyways we managed to get there an hour and a half before high tide so that was spot on for leaving the marina we were in as it was quite shallow where the boat was berthed!
Note: (At this point of the trip) it’s was a glorious sunny afternoon around 27degrees if I remember correctly.
On arrival we met the seller and the broker, I walked round while the guys I was with started to plan routes and get things ready.
The seller was explaining how most things worked as you would do selling a large boat to someone. He knew all the ins and outs of his boat that he had owned for more than 8 years. I was stepping into no mans land with this new boat not knowing how things worked or what to do in the event of an issue..
(Funny part on its way) SO, if you know me you may know that I have some knowledge of boating - this new vessel is 56ft that measures just over 17m with swim platform of another 1.5m! It also weighs 34 TONNES at present kitted out.
So just for comparison my last boat was a 6.8m long! It was almost 1.5 TONNES.
BIG DIFFERENCE EH! I was well aware.
Anyways I will cut to the chase, meanwhile the boat seller was walking me round proudly showing off his loved and cherished boat, he was telling me how to work the sky tv and how to turn on the microwave that he had just replaced, heating system, hot water, showing me sea c***s and the toilet systems…. All I could bloody think about was how the hell am I going to drive (or now I say) “pilot” this out of this tight marina! 😂😂
I was literally crapping myself I had to keep my cool as my soon to be crew might have just left me if they new I didn’t know how to “DRIVE” this ship 😂
So eventually the seller finishes and the broker gets me to sign the documents and transfer the final balance to them…
The best part of the whole journey for me was when I asked these 2 men plus my own crew to be “HOW DO YOU DRIVE THIS THING!” (Pilot I should have said).
At this point it felt like everyone on the boat just turned to me and gasped, it was like they genuinely hit a wall of fear!
I continued swiftly to state the fact that I had another boat and I had been on boats since I was young to try calm the situation!
💡 Good news was that iv been a builder for 24 years and in fact with a combination of previous boating experience and operating diggers with dual sticks and a whole lot of slowly slowly, I done not too bad on exiting the marina in my new vessel!
I find the twin screw vessels much like operating a digger just on the water is a lot different with drifting, tides and winds etc! ALOT DIFFERENT!
If you have read this far and have enjoyed the story so far please follow my page for the rest of the trip/ story where we have all sorts of issues and fun on the way home to James Watt marina in port Glasgow.
Also give it a share, muchas gracias!
