We’re wrapping up works for the Christmas period, but before we go and indulge in yet another mince pie, we’d like to give our heartfelt thanks to all who have brought their custom to James’ Model Railway Company this year, whether it be a sound chip fitted into a small loco or a bespoke layout build, your custom means that James gets to live out his dream job. The whole team thanks you and we wish you a very Merry Christmas and the absolute best for 2026. See you in the New Year!

All the frame work and layout sections are in!

This has been a mammoth task with many helping hands but the Trent project has made it safely from the workshop to the client's home and it looks absolutely fantastic.

It's been another long day but we're all incredibly pleased with how this move has gone. There are two more days booked for, I think the official term is 'fettling', and then it's up to the client to start on the scenery.

Tonight we celebrate with a couple of beers and a good night's sleep 😁

Thanks for following along with us 😊

Layout eats man!! 😁

As this huge layout takes shape once more there's multiple build areas from backscenes to burying Steve under the layout to do up hard-to-reach bolts! A full day of spraying sleeper grime, track cleaning, heavy lifting and maneuvering, and the occasional bacon butty.

Tomorrow we fit the helixes...or is it helices?! Anyway, they go in tomorrow 🤞

Phew, what a long second day! With the layout dismantled last night down to the frame, half the team went on ahead to assemble that while we worked on the last set of electrics on the very back boards before loading two more vans with this monumental layout.
The frame is almost rebuilt and even the backscene is going in. It's all starting to look rather awesome!
We're all off for a well deserved pint...😎

It's fine, nothing to see here! 😅Join us tomorrow to see if we managed to load the van and not lose Steve!

James' role in the creation of the 'Trent' project is nearing its end and while the finishing woodwork is being done the team are planning the move in the next couple of weeks to get this into the client's home.

James will spend next week cleaning up after all the construction work, and thoroughly testing the tracks before we deconstruct this colossus!

We'll be documenting the move and reconstruction as best we can given the client's right to privacy - it'll be a very lucky few that get to see this fantastic build come to life as a scenic working railway layout.

This is the Trent Project, it's working title, but honestly, we should change it to the Titan Project now 😅

Three layers of model railway layout with a helix, it's huge and is exactly what the customer wanted.

It's nearing the completion of the work James was commissioned to do, the customer wants to focus on the scenery themselves. All that will be left to us as James wraps up his work will be to dismantle and reassemble it on site at the customer's residence. Piece of cake, right?! 😉

Kelly's Weathering Studios is one of the small businesses James works with to provide the highest quality service to his customers.

Kelly is a model railway enthusiast herself, with many years experience of building layouts at exhibition level, and now she focuses on using her modeling and weathering skills to bring that magic to other people's layouts.

This customer’s locomotive is an HO scale EMD GP380-2. It used to be in Union Pacific colors but has been exquisitely re-sprayed by Kelly into CSX colors. The attention to detail, the crispness and clean lines are why James works with Kelly, she really puts a lot of love into the work she does.

The very big build which we refer to as the ‘Trent Project’ is actually based on a real station, the Nottingham (Victoria).

Nottingham (Victoria) was the interchange between the Great Central and Great Northern railways before British Rail days.

This timetable poster is the property of another customer, unrelated to the Trent Project, but who has very kindly let us borrow it to have it professionally photographed and reproduced so this build’s owner can have a framed facsimile to display with the finished layout, a lovely touch to an outstanding model railway.

We knew the ‘Trent Project’ was always going to be a big build, the client wanted to have a large layout as they have a very large space set aside for their dream model railway.

But even though this project was meticulously planned in the early research and design phase, we’re all still a little bit blown away with just how big this layout is, including the client! The helix alone is a work of art as James slowly disappears inside it! The scenery has evolved and there’s now an extra station with carriage sidings, James’ suggestion, so that the storage for trains when they’ve met their timetable schedule and are no longer running, still have operational interest in the layout. This adds to the overall feel of this railway making you want to stand at every angle and height trying to take it all in.

It’s a huge build. It’s been carefully planned, designed in very close communication with the client to ensure it doesn’t just meet their running and modeling needs, but works with them to build a better layout than they could ever envision.

There’s more work to do in the workshop before this build is dismantled, transported and rebuilt in the client’s property, a task we are all very much looking forward to, and we’’ll share that with you when it happens. It may take us a few days, endless cups of tea and coffee and no doubt a lot of packets of biscuits…

If you think you’d like to work with James and his team to build your dream layout, whatever the size, get in touch and let’s have a chat.
