Menawethan, currently crewed by a team from a specialist delivery company, has now departed from her final planned bunker stop and is continuing towards Piriou’s shipyard in Concarneau, France, before onward passage to Penzance.

While Penzance will mark Menawethan’s first arrival into Cornwall, this is not the end of her journey before entering service for the Isles of Scilly. The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group will formally take ownership of the vessel in Penzance following the completion of final contractual and legal procedures, after which the delivery crew will step down and preparations for welcoming her to the islands and into service will begin.

This next phase will include a Maritime and Coastguard Agency survey, alongside crew familiarisation, training and sea trials carried out by our own teams. Importantly, Menawethan’s first ever voyage to the Isles of Scilly will form part of this familiarisation process, meaning it will be Isles of Scilly Steamship Group crew who bring her to the islands for the very first time.

We know how significant that first arrival into Scilly will be for the islands and the wider community, and we look forward to sharing more details as plans progress.

"She carries my name.”

For more than three decades, Gry Maritha has been more than a freight vessel. She’s been a lifeline, a familiar sight and a part of the Isles of Scilly.

Named after the daughter of her first captain, her story stretches from the Norwegian fjords to the Isles of Scilly. For Gry Maritha Sevaldsen, the ship has always been deeply personal. A link to her father, her family’s legacy, and now, to a community thousands of miles from where it all began.

Witnessing the future of the Isles of Scilly fleet in Vietnam

Islander and Board Member, Sam Hicks, recently visited the shipyard in Ho Chi Minh City to witness two hugely symbolic milestones years in the making: the completion of Menawethan and the launch of Scillonian IV.

Designed for greater comfort, stability and reliability, these new vessels represent a major step forward for both passenger services and freight operations.
