Island connections that span generations 🏝️

Earlier this week, our Managing Director, Dr Simon Mitchell, had the privilege of flying his father, John Mitchell, back to Tresco shortly after celebrating his 95th birthday.

For the Mitchell family, the journey was more than a visit. Their connection to the Isles of Scilly can be traced back to at least 1695, with deep roots across Tresco and the wider island community.

During their time on the island, John returned to the house where he was born, in 1931, revisited the school he attended during WWII, and spent time in the Abbey Gardens beneath the famous Neptune figurehead - originally mounted on its base by his uncle, Walter Mitchell.

The visit also reflected the family’s longstanding connection with aviation. John served as an RAF Officer, while Simon now leads the helicopter service connecting Penzance and Scilly today - continuing a relationship with the islands that spans generations.

Stories like these are a reminder that the connection between mainland Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has always been about more than travel. It’s about family, heritage, community, and the enduring ties that bring people back to the islands time and time again.

This marks the beginning of a new series sharing the personal ties that many of our team and passengers have with the Isles of Scilly.
