Skybus Update: Reliable fuel supply

We know there’s been some national media coverage around possible jet fuel shortages, so we wanted to offer reassurance to our customers and island community.

Skybus services continue to operate as normal, with robust fuel supplies in place both at Land’s End Airport and St Mary’s Airport to support our lifeline air services.

Working with long-standing supplier Air BP, fuel availability remains normal, and we have every confidence in continued supply. Importantly, our arrangements provide resilience for our operations, including support for emergency services such as HM Coastguard.

Behind the scenes, we continue to plan carefully and engage at every level to keep Scilly connected.

For our customers, it’s business as usual and we look forward to welcoming you on board to the beautiful Isles of Scilly very soon.

Land’s End Airport supported an emergency HM Coastguard operation yesterday evening, facilitating the arrival of their S92 helicopter.

The helicopter landed at Land’s End to transfer a patient to a waiting land ambulance. This was accommodated after a full day of scheduled operations, including 12 return flights to the Isles of Scilly, with airfield services and the terminal building remaining open to support the response.

The incident highlights Land’s End Airport’s role as the primary air link to the Isles of Scilly and a site capable of supporting critical emergency operations alongside its daily commercial services.

⚠️ Today, we identified and reported an unathorised drone operating low-level at the Airport.

Operating a drone near an airport is not just a hobbyist mistake—it is a serious criminal offence.

One "quick drone flight" can ground hundreds of passengers and divert dozens of flights. Unauthorised drones interfere with critical air traffic control and emergency responses.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the Police enforce strict Flight Restriction Zones (FRZs) that typically extend 5km around airports. Violating these rules can lead to:

Prison Sentences: Up to 5 years for endangering the safety of an aircraft.

Heavy Fines: Unlimited fines for major violations, or on-the-spot penalties starting at £100 for minor infractions.

Criminal Record & Seizure: Police have the power to seize your equipment and prosecute you under the Air Navigation Order.

Safety is always our number one priority. ✅️

We’re working with Devon & Cornwall Police to investigate today’s event to track and prosecute the drone operator.

As well as being the base for our sister airline Isles of Scilly Skybus Limited, the Airport supports several other businesses. One of these is "Air Cornwall"- a local Flying School that set-up at the Airport about two and a half years ago. The Flying School is owned and run by experienced instructor, Gary Perry. We invited Gary to tell us a bit about "Air Cornwall"....

Hello to all, that support and follow Lands End Airport via social media. My name is Gary, and i am the proprietor of Air Cornwall, which has been based at the airport since March 2023. I carry out pilot training, to help people fulfill their dreams of becoming a fixed wing aircraft pilot, achieving the National Private Pilot License (NPPL). I also offer air experience flights/trial lessons, in the plane, which are normally gifted by relatives and friends, via a gift voucher. Come and see for yourselves the beauty of West Cornwall from the air, or even better, give someone special that flying gift. The airport is a perfect place to train, as it has beautiful tarmac and grass runways, full air traffic control, and is perched on the top of the cliffs above the stunning Gwynver and Sennen beaches. Although this is the main part of what i do for a living, and i'm happy to fly any time of the year that is flyable, i am also a Commercial helicopter pilot and fly, as and when needed, the legendary Bell 206 jetranger throughout the U.K. I have been a helicopter pilot for 20 years, and a fixed wing pilot for 15 years, instructing since 2016. This year i have trained four people who have passed the general skills test with our examiner, and have three students who are currently in training. The four people who have qualified this season are:

Nicola Wright ( Ltd company director)
Doug Stembridge ( Merchant Navy officer)
Tom James ( Compliance manager for a major local haulier)
Harry Randall, Refresher training, Requal ( Paramedic)

All have done really well, being focussed and committed to achieving their goal, so congratulations once again Captains.

You can visit my website; aircornwall.co.uk and/or my "Air Cornwall" page to see what we get up to, or to contact me directly.

Best wishes to all

Gary
