Bromley Living Streets has joined with local community and faith-based groups to publish an open letter calling on Bromley Council and local election candidates to declare a climate emergency and set a target to reach net-zero emissions for all activities across the borough - see: www.walkthetalkbromley.co.uk
WHY?
The current 2027 net-zero target only covers the council organisation's emissions, which come to 1-2% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the borough. There is no target, and no plan, to reduce the other 98-99% of GHG emissions. Bromley Council must take bold action to ensure that we reach net-zero for all emissions across the borough - including transport, housing and industrial activities - before the government's 2050 deadline.
WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH SAFER STREETS FOR WALKING AND CYCLING?
Transport, primarily the use of motor vehicles, is a major source of GHG emissions in . We know that the lack of safe infrastructures (pedestrian crossings, separated cycle lanes, dropped kerbs, clutter-free pavements, provision for wheelchairs and mobility aids) is a major barrier to switching to lower-carbon transport modes. Safer streets are therefore critical to reduce carbon emissions, as well as improving road safety.
