Support Expansion

The London Cycling Campaign is asking for your support to make sure the expansion happens ... "Please email Transport for London to say we need the to cut pollution, reduce unnecessary motor traffic journeys, cut carbon emissions, and free up space on our roads for more , and ." ⬇️

I have just supported the ULEZ expansion. It takes just two minutes to tell Transport for London you would like to see ULEZ extended to all of Greater London. Please will you do the same? https://action.lcc.org.uk/ulez

People who walk, wheel or cycle do not contribute to air pollution, yet are unfairly exposed to it.

We should all be able to choose active, healthy, and pollution-cutting ways to travel without being exposed to toxic emissions.

If you agree it's time to expand London's Ultra Low Emission Zone, Living Streets has an online form to help you respond to the Transport for London consultation, here:

London is in the grip of an air pollution crisis. That's why Living Streets supports proposals to extend the Ultra Low Emission Zone. Agree? Respond to TfL's consultation using our online form.

Bromley Living Streets has joined with local community and faith-based groups to publish an open letter calling on Bromley Council and local election candidates to declare a climate emergency and set a target to reach net-zero emissions for all activities across the borough - see: www.walkthetalkbromley.co.uk

WHY?
The current 2027 net-zero target only covers the council organisation's emissions, which come to 1-2% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the borough. There is no target, and no plan, to reduce the other 98-99% of GHG emissions. Bromley Council must take bold action to ensure that we reach net-zero for all emissions across the borough - including transport, housing and industrial activities - before the government's 2050 deadline.

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH SAFER STREETS FOR WALKING AND CYCLING?
Transport, primarily the use of motor vehicles, is a major source of GHG emissions in . We know that the lack of safe infrastructures (pedestrian crossings, separated cycle lanes, dropped kerbs, clutter-free pavements, provision for wheelchairs and mobility aids) is a major barrier to switching to lower-carbon transport modes. Safer streets are therefore critical to reduce carbon emissions, as well as improving road safety.

See more information at www.walkthetalkbromley.co.uk, plus a link to sign the letter as an individual. If you lead a business or community group and would like to join this coalition, email [email protected].

FAKE NEWS?

Bromley Council’s Environment Matters Winter 2021 issue includes a misleading item on page 11 championing our borough’s road safety record.

Notably absent from the reported ‘record low’ KSIs in 2020 is context: (a) a record LOW transport flow, including 20% less cars on the borough's roads, and (b) a record HIGH number of 112 cyclist casualties - both in themselves records since TfL began publishing data in 2008.

Accompanying this is a spurious party-political comparison of KSI rates, pitting outer London Bromley borough with lowest population density and most rural roads (13%), against inner London Greenwich, Southwark, Lambeth and Lewisham boroughs with far, far higher population densities and no rural roads (0%).

However, thanks are due to Bromley Council’s transport team who strive ‘to improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists’ despite their efforts being hampered by a number of Conservative Councillors seemingly unaware of their Government’s active travel strategy published in 2020 - Gear Change: a bold vision of cycling and walking -https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/904146/gear-change-a-bold-vision-for-cycling-and-walking.pdf

CROFTON ROAD MYTHBUSTER
One persistently vocal opponent of improvements for active travel on and around Crofton Road, Orpington, has been Petts Wood & Knoll Ward Councillor Tony Owen, the current Deputy Mayor.
Cllr Owen has asserted that the new cycleway will have a negative impact on emergency services' response times - a claim that has been dismissed by the Fire Brigade, Police and Ambulance Service in replies to Cllr Owen's question submitted to the Safer Bromley Partnership Board and published with the agenda for the board's meeting on 9 December - https://cds.bromley.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=132&MId=7230

WATCH: Cycling the new Crofton Road semi-protected cycleway from Orpington Station to Crofton Avenue on Friday 5 November 2021.

This section of the route from Orpington High Street to Locksbottom and the A21 is now complete, save for installing the light segregation, coloured surfacing, and rain garden planting indicated on scheme drawings.
