On 3rd April 2022, you join Joe and Steve on a visit to Didcot Railway Centre for a very special event for the launch of 4079, 'Pendennis Castle', after its restoration.
Built in 1924 as one of the 171 strong 4073, 'Castle' Class- 4079, ' Pendennis Castle', is one of the most famous members of the celebrated class. The locomotive's fame comes from its 1925 stint for the LNER on the East Coast Main Line as part of the locomotive exchange trials of the early 1920s. Found to be more efficient on coal and water than Gresley's A1 Pacific class, the Castle regularly made the ascent from London Kings Cross to Finsbury Park in less than six minutes, a feat that the Pacifics could not match.
After retiring from service with British Railways in May 1964, the locomotive was purchased and preserved and operated the occasional special from Didcot. In 1977, the Castle was exported to Western Australia and ended up working excursion trains. In 1989, 4079 was towed to Perth, where it had a historic reunion with Flying Scotsman.
Returned to the UK in 2000, restoration work began at Didcot in 2005 and was returned to steam for the first time in 2021. Pendennis was relaunched to the general public in 2022.
A really enjoyable event, with lots of different bits and pieces on display to enjoy. Obviously, the highlight was the Castle, but it was great to see other examples of GWR traction, including the King, Saint and Hall classes. The on site facilities were very good, with the cafe providing an excellent lunch. All in all, a wonderful day.
