It’s genuinely heart warming to see so many families returning to the railway for our Festive Express every year. One family, in particular, has turned it into their annual Christmas tradition to join us, fully embracing the festive spirit!
The highly popular Chase the Train run started at Aylsham Station earlier this morning. This annual event is organised by the North Norfolk Beach Runners Club to raise funds for charitable causes. This year’s chosen charity is All About Friends.
We wish the runners good luck! Let's see if any of them can catch the trainđźš‚

Visitors at Wroxham Station always seem to enjoy seeing the locomotive being turned. In normal service locomotives travel with the chimney facing the direction of travel. At each end of the line we have a turntable to turn the locomotives. When correctly positioned on the turntable 13 tonnes of locomotive is easily turned by one person.

Over recent months, the team in the workshop here at Aylsham have been busy building a new guards van. This will give us four guards vans, meaning that we can undertake scheduled maintenance on a guards van and still be able to operate a three train service.
Before entering service the van was taken on a number of test trips along the railway. Here we see it passing through Coltishall station behind the diesel loco.
No.8 John of Gaunt hurries its train along between Mill Street Bridge and River Bridge in Buxton on it's way from Aylsham to Wroxham.
Unlike much of the National Mainline network which uses either semaphore or colour light signals The Bure Valley Railway uses radio signalling. The line is divided up into sections or blocks and only one train may be in a section at any one time. The driver requests permission to enter each section and confirms when he is in that section.
Permission is given by the signal box at Aylsham Station. In the same way as air traffic control all communication is recorded onto a black box. Neither the driver or signalman can access the recordings.
The guard on the train also listens to all the radio traffic and if his driver does not get the required permission he can apply the brakes and stop the train preventing it entering a section it does not have permission for.
