I recently carried out a full pre-purchase survey on a Beneteau Oceanis 48 in Preveza — and it wasn’t just ‘tapping the hull.’ I spent the day inspecting the hull ashore (moisture readings, percussion sounding, keel and rudder checks), reviewing deck, rigging and safety gear, then ran a thorough sea trial to test engines, steering, autopilot and electrical systems.

What you get from a proper survey isn’t a reason not to buy — it’s clarity. On this yacht the sea trial proved the systems performed well, with only routine maintenance items noted. That independent assessment can be worth tens of thousands of euros when negotiating, arranging insurance or securing a loan.
