Toyota and Joby Aviation, a U.S. company developing electric air taxis, have completed Joby's first international test flight. The demonstration took place at Toyota’s Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Japan, showcasing the air taxi's quiet, emissions-free design near Mount Fuji.

Joby’s electric air taxi, built for a pilot and four passengers, can reach speeds of up to 200 mph while producing far less noise than helicopters.

Aimed at easing traffic and reducing environmental impact, this service promises to improve transportation in both urban and rural areas in Japan and beyond.

Great road safety advice for the darker evenings 👌✅

As we all settle into the darker nights and change our clocks (yes, even the one on the oven), it is important to remind each other of how this affects our safety as road users.

Norfolk are supporting a national campaign, running for two weeks, designed to raise awareness of the risks faced by pedestrians and horse riders. These groups tend to disproportionately account for those seriously injured or killed in collisions on the roads. The campaign begins today (28 October 2024).

Incidents involving pedestrians and horse riders often occur when a motorist has failed to slow down sufficiently and allow sufficient space to go around them – which is a particular issue with urban roads.

When overtaking a horse, motorists should:

- Slow down to a maximum of 10mph
- Be patient, do not sound your horn or rev your engine
- Pass the horse wide and slow – at least two metres
- Drive slowly away

Being aware of pedestrians crossing roads and walking along roads – particularly in the countryside – is something else motorists should be alert to and allow time and space for.

In a world-first, German-Swiss company Liebherr has unveiled the L566 H, a hydrogen-powered prototype wheel loader. Partnering with construction firm Strabag, the loader is part of a two-year pilot at Gratkorn quarry in Austria.

The loader runs on a modified hydrogen combustion engine, built at Liebherr’s engine plant in Switzerland, which produces no CO2 or nitrous oxide emissions while maintaining high energy efficiency.

Liebherr estimates that switching from diesel to hydrogen could prevent 100 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually and save over 9,900 gallons of diesel. However, the loader will need green hydrogen though availability remains a challenge.

On October 10, Elon Musk showcased Tesla's latest innovations, the Cybercab and Robovan, at the 'We, Robot' event at Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank, California. The Cybercab, inspired by the Cybertruck, features butterfly doors and two seats, marking Tesla's entry into the autonomous taxi market.

Musk also introduced the Robovan, capable of transporting up to 20 people or goods, emphasizing Tesla's focus on high-capacity, autonomous transport solutions. Highlighting the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of autonomous vehicles, Musk announced the Cybercab would be available for personal use at a price below $30,000, with an operating cost of 20 cents per mile.

Production of the Cybercab is expected before 2027, with unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) anticipated in Texas and California by next year.

Incredible feat by Korea 👍✅

Hogreen Air, a South Korean company, has launched a high-speed hydrogen fuel cell drone at the H2 MEET conference in Seoul. This advanced drone, designed for long-range surveillance, can operate for up to 14 hours using hydrogen in gas or liquid form.

Equipped with radio frequency and LTE/5G communication, it carries up to 10 kg. Impressively, the drone recently flew remotely in Germany, while being controlled from South Korea, nearly 5,778 miles away, and also flew autonomously in the US, 5,618 miles away.

Using liquefied hydrogen, which is 800 times denser than gas, Hogreen Air's drone far outperforms traditional lithium battery drones that last only 10 to 30 minutes.

* We are testing new remote tachograph equipment to help us pull data from vehicles fitted with smart tachographs, as they travel.

Examiners will be able to identify the following tachograph violations
- Whether a tachograph card is inserted
- If a tachograph has been tampered with
- If its correctly calibrated when travelling alongside vehicles or
on the roadside.

Whilst the majority of the industry is compliant the DVSA are still identifying cases of serious rule violations.
