Here’s Driftweed entering the historic Harecastle Tunnel!
Designed by the legendary Thomas Telford 🏗️ and completed in 1827, this engineering marvel stretches 2,676 meters (1.65 miles) long 📏. It originally featured a towpath for horses 🐎, making navigation easier back in the day. Built to transport coal 🪨 to the Staffordshire Potteries 🏺, it played a vital role in fueling the region’s industrial growth.

You can also see the distinctive orange color of the water 🧡 in Harecastle Tunnel — a result of natural discolouration from groundwater rich in iron oxide leaching into the canal.

Driftweed is a couple of weeks into her four week trip around the midlands canal system. Here’s a picture of her visiting the Etruria Industrial Museum & Heritage Centre in Stoke-on-Trent in the heart of the potteries.
