Random Fact Friday

Today is National Biscuit Day, celebrated on both sides of the pond… although the Americans do things a bit differently. Their biscuits are more like savoury scones, while here in Yorkshire we know a proper biscuit should have a bit of crunch to it.

Take the humble Digestive biscuit for example. It was first introduced back in the 1800s and originally marketed as a health food because it contained baking soda, which at the time people believed helped with digestion, hence the name Digestive.

Sadly for some, modern digestives don’t really come with any special health benefits these days, but they do still go perfectly with a good cup of tea. 🫖

And you know who else works well with a cuppa? A removal team. A well-timed brew has kept many a moving day going smoothly over the years.

There’s a reason we’ve been moving homes and businesses for over 107 years and four generations.

We’ve been moving Yorkshire for 107 years today! 🎂🎈🎉

What began with Percy William Archer and his brother Horace running a small haulage and removals business quickly became a trusted name across the county. Back in the early days, we’d turn our hand to just about anything, from domestic waste collection to transporting huge blocks of ice from Darlington for Northallerton’s butchers and fishmongers. 🧊

In 1946 we became P.W. Archer & Son, and although changes to the transport industry in the 1950s reduced parts of our haulage fleet, our removals, storage and warehousing services continued to grow from strength to strength.

By the 1960s, under John Brendon “Brenny” Archer, the business expanded further from our Springwell Lane depot, becoming well known throughout Yorkshire for dependable haulage, storage and removals services.

Today, 107 years later, we remain proudly family-owned and operated, now a fourth-generation business, with the fifth generation already looking towards the future.

We still believe in the same things we did back in 1920, hard work, loyalty, looking after our customers properly, and getting the job done right the first time.

In fact, we’ve even banked with the same bank since the very beginning… and round here, that says a lot.

Thank you to everyone who’s supported us over the years. Here’s to the next chapter of Archers.

Now then, happy Friday 👋

We often say you don’t notice what’s on your own doorstep until you take a proper look. 👀

We were over in the other day on home visits and managed to grab a quick coffee and sandwich. While we were sat having a break, we took in the famous Brick Train, one of those proper standout pieces of artwork you get dotted around North Yorkshire and the North East.

Built in 1994, it’s a sculpture of the Mallard steam locomotive, marking Darlington’s proud railway heritage. As many will know, Darlington was one end of the Stockton to Darlington Railway, the world’s first public railway to use steam locomotives.

The Mallard itself still holds the world speed record for a steam locomotive at 126 mph.

Now for the technical bit… it was designed by David Mach, built using around 185,000 bricks and 170 cubic metres of concrete. It took 34 workers 21 weeks to complete. It stands 23 feet high, 120 feet long, weighs around 15,000 tonnes, and covers over 6,000 square feet.

If you’re passing along the A66 near Darlington, keep an eye out for it, well worth a look.

At Archers Removals, we cover all towns and across the country, with free, no obligation home visits. We’ll come out, do a proper survey, and talk through your move face to face.

After that, we’ll send your quotation by post or email, all prices provided in writing, with BAR Trading Standards approved terms and conditions.

Seeing more twin prams out and about lately? You’re not imagining it.

A recent survey shows the “twinning rate” has increased from 9 to 12 twins per 1,000 births, meaning roughly 1 in every 42 babies born worldwide is a twin.

As families grow, homes often need to grow with them too. That usually means one of two things, moving to a larger property, or improving the one you’re in.

Either way, Archers Removals can help. Whether you’re relocating to a new family home or need furniture safely moving into storage while building work is carried out, we’ve got it covered.

Happy Friday, and a Bank Holiday one at that!

Did you know May Day has been celebrated for over 2,000 years? It originally marked the start of summer, with people lighting fires, dancing round maypoles and making the most of the longer, warmer days ahead.

Fast forward to today, and while the maypoles might be few and far between, the idea’s still the same, a fresh start, longer days and a bit more time to enjoy where you live.

And that’s where it ties in nicely with moving. This time of year is one of the busiest for us. Better weather, lighter evenings and that feeling of let’s get things moving means plenty of people are starting their next chapter in a new home.

Whether it’s a fresh start, more space, or a change of scenery, there’s something about this time of year that gets people on the move.

If you’re thinking about making a move this spring, now’s a good time to get things underway.

Random fact Friday 🏃

Back in 2013, London became the first city in the world to have hosted the Olympic Games three times, in 1908, 1948 and 2012. Not a bad achievement.

It got us thinking… a bit like the Olympic torch, we often find ourselves returning to the same places time and time again. The same streets, the same towns, and quite often the same customers too.

There’s something to be said for that. When people come back to us for another move, it tells you we’re doing things the right way.

Whether it’s your first move with Archers or you’ve used us before, you can expect the same level of care, planning and professionalism every time.

There’s a reason we’ve been moving homes and businesses for over 106 years.

Today is National Tea Day ☕

A day to celebrate the humble cup of tea. Something that brings people together, keeps us going, and, in our line of work, plays a small but important role in the day.

In removals, a good brew is never far away. It’s often the first thing set up in a new home and a welcome pause during a busy moving day. There’s something about a cup of tea that helps settle the dust, lifts spirits, and keeps things moving in the right direction.

“Brew more, do more” might sound simple, but there’s a bit of truth in it. A well timed cuppa can make all the difference.

So wherever you are today, take a moment, put the kettle on, and enjoy a proper brew.

There’s a reason we’ve been moving homes and businesses for over 106 years and four generations, and a fair few cups of tea have helped along the way!

Random fact Friday ☀️

It’s great to see the weather turning, and nice to get out in the spring sunshine for a catch up with friends and a cold drink.

One popular place to meet is “Spoons”… but what’s in the name?

Wetherspoon’s started back in 1979 by Tim Martin. The name actually comes from a teacher at his school who didn’t think he’d go very far, and the “JD” comes from the character J.D. ‘Boss’ Hogg from The Dukes of Hazzard.

Spring is also when we start to see things pick up in removals. The better weather and longer days get people thinking about a fresh start.

Now then, we might not be heading to the pub just yet, but we will be making the most of the lighter evenings after a busy week.

Have a great weekend all!

Happy Friday

Spring is well and truly here! 🌼

Here’s one for you… did you know that during spring, the days get longer by around 4 minutes every 24 hours? It might not sound much, but over a few weeks it soon adds up, which is why everything suddenly feels a bit brighter and more energetic this time of year.

It’s also the season when most people start thinking about a fresh start.

From our side of things, spring is one of the busiest times of the year for moving. Better weather, longer days and a bit more daylight to work with all help things run that bit smoother on moving day.

After over 106 years of moving homes, we can safely say there’s something about spring that gets people on the move.

If you’re thinking about a move this spring, now’s a good time to get the ball rolling.
