Pulling or spraying just get rid as it seems to be a bumper year for it 😭 or the least cut the flowers off and burn them to stop 1000’s of seeds getting into your soil.
I’m sure the Cinnabar caterpillar can survive without the ragwort in our fields 😬
🐴⚠️ Ragwort: A Hidden Danger to Horses ⚠️🐴
Have you spotted bright yellow ragwort flowering in your fields? While it may look harmless, ragwort is highly toxic to horses and can cause serious, irreversible liver damage.
🌱 What is Ragwort?
Ragwort is a common w**d found in paddocks, field margins, and roadside verges. It produces clusters of bright yellow flowers and spreads rapidly if left unmanaged.
⚠️ Why is it Dangerous?
Ragwort contains toxins that damage the liver over time. Horses usually avoid fresh plants due to their bitter taste, but when ragwort is wilted, dried, or present in hay and haylage, it becomes more palatable while remaining just as toxic.
🐴 Signs of Ragwort Poisoning
• Weight loss
• Lethargy or poor performance
• Dull coat
• Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or gums)
• Behavioural or neurological changes
• Sun sensitivity, particularly in unpigmented skin
Unfortunately, signs often don't appear until significant liver damage has already occurred.
How to Manage Ragwort
• Check fields regularly throughout spring and summer.
• Remove plants before they flower and set seed.
• Wear gloves and pull up as much of the root as possible.
• Dispose of plants safely—never leave pulled ragwort in the field, as wilted plants are more attractive to horses.
• Maintain healthy pasture management and avoid overgrazing.
• Check hay and haylage carefully and purchase from reputable suppliers.
When to Call Your Vet
If you suspect your horse has eaten ragwort or is showing signs of liver disease, contact your vet promptly. Early investigation can help assess liver health and guide management,
Regular paddock checks and good pasture management are the best ways to protect your horse from this preventable risk.
