Replica of new Metro train gets a new lease of life!

The Metro cab mock-up has been given a permanent home at SafetyWorks! in Newcastle, an interactive education centre providing realistic, hands-on safety training for schools, youth groups, and community organisations.

It has now become part of the immersive Metro safety training facility, which includes a Metro station, tracks, ticket machines, platforms, and a level crossing.

SafetyWorks! is a multi-agency training facility which is used by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, Northumbria Police, Nexus, RNLI, Local Authority Road Safety Teams, and Blue Cross UK animal charity.

Nexus, and the local authorities to conduct safety awareness days for young people. It is visited by 5,000 school children every year.

A new exhibition has been unveiled at Tynemouth Metro station to commemorate Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

The art work, located in the station’s popular Bridge Gallery, features a connecting chain of lab coats – symbolising the role of researchers, and the key breakthroughs in children’s cancer research over recent decades.

The lab coats hang centrally in the exhibition space to represent the individual scientists, their teamwork, and the complex, precise nature of their groundbreaking research.

Titled ‘Kinder Treatments’, the exhibit will be on display at Tynemouth Metro station until Tuesday 13 October.

The installation is the second collaborative project that Children's Cancer North and North Tyneside Art Studio have worked on.

Have you seen the latest proposals for the Metro to Washington extension?

Take a look at the post below to find out more, learn how you can submit feedback and visit an upcoming drop-in session.

Today we have announced the latest proposals for the planned Metro extension to Washington. The proposals outline three new stations – located at Follingsby, Washington North and Washington South - as well as seeing the line cross the River Wear via the Victoria Viaduct, travel towards and under the A19, and connect with the current network at South Hylton.

The 13km Metro extension plays a critical role in North East Mayor Kim McGuinness’ vision to transform local transport and create an integrated network spanning the region.

Throughout September, we'll be holding a series of public engagement events where you can:

✅ View the proposals in detail
✅ Meet the team
✅ Ask questions
✅ Share your feedback

John’s charity challenge makes the TV news

Trainee Metro driver John Loraine has appeared on BBC Look North to talk more about his epic fundraising challenges.

John was interviewed in the BBC studio by presenter Dawn Thewlis during the main news bulletin at 6.30pm on Wednesday, 2 September.

And despite being on live television he gave a consummate and poignant interview about his recovery from a mental health crisis.

It was a chance for him to promote the series of extreme physical endurance challenges he’s taking on for a charity that he credits with saving his own life.

John, who joined us in June, is raising money for Climbing Out, an outreach service that supports adults following life-changing injuries, illness or trauma.

The 37 year old is a former police officer who is candid about his recovery from mental health issues.

He worked for the Northumbria Police force for 17 years before becoming a Metro driver. Policing was a job he loved, but he says that some aspects of it have impacted him greatly.
